Recurrent atrial tachycardia (AT) is a common phenomenon after catheter ablation for AF, particularly in the setting of additional substrate ablation, with many studies demonstrating gap-related macro re-entrant AT (predominantly mitral and roof dependent) to be the dominant mechanism. Although multiple inducible ATs after ablation of the clinical AT are commonly described at repeat procedures, the optimal ablation strategy, and procedural endpoints are unclear in this setting. A recent randomized study addressing the question of non-inducibility as a procedural endpoint demonstrated no additional benefits to the ablation of all induced, non-clinical ATs, but it was limited by small numbers and high rates of non-inducibility. Nevertheless, once ablation of the clinical AT has been successfully performed, ensuring durable linear block and PV isolation may be sufficient for the prevention of further AT. Durable linear block, particularly at the mitral isthmus, is difficult to achieve but may be facilitated by the real-time evaluation of lesion quality and contiguity and the novel technique of vein of Marshall ethanol infusion. Large-scale, randomized trials are needed, nonetheless, to fully assess the optimal ablation strategy in the setting of recurrent AT post-AF ablation. ispartof: FRONTIERS IN CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE vol:9 ispartof: location:Switzerland status: published

Epsilon sequence (UUAACUUUA) has originally been found in the bacteriophage T7 gene 10 leader region. It enhances translation in Escherichia coli via base pairing with nucleotides 458-466 located in the helical domain #17 of 16S rRNA. We have recently reported that when the complementarity to 16S rRNA is extended, the epsilon is converted from an enhancer to an independent initiator of translation. Here we report the effect of two other structural parameters, positioning in mRNA and the degree of complementarity to 16S rRNA on the translation initiation activity of epsilon in E. coli cells. Our results show that epsilon displays maximal activity as a translational initiator at its natural 9-nucleotide-long complementarity to 16S rRNA and at a 16-nucleotide-long distance to the initiation codon. Under these conditions its efficiency is comparable with that of the consensus Shine-Dalgarno sequence.

Jandl; Patrick Fournier; Dimitre Dimitrov;Abstract A large magnetocaloric effect can be obtained around T N, Dy 8 K simply by spinning the orthorhombic DyMnO 3 single crystal within the cb -plane in a constant magnetic field, instead of the standard magnetization–demagnetization process. Under 7 T, the maximum rotating entropy change (−Δ S R, cb ) and the associated adiabatic temperature change (Δ T ad, cb ) are 16.3 J/kg K and 11 K, respectively. The corresponding refrigerant capacity is 440 J/kg, with no thermal and field hysteresis losses. Our findings show that the orthorhombic DyMnO 3 could be used as a good refrigerant in more compact and efficient cryomagnetocaloric refrigerators.

Muscle strength was assessed with hand-held dynamometry (HHD), with upper extremity (UE) and lower extremity (LE) composite scores reflecting upper and lower extremity muscle groups, respectively. The GNE myopathy-Functional Activity Scale (GNEM-FAS) was used to further assess impairment in mobility, upper extremity function, and self-care.ResultsEighty-seven of 101 enrolled subjects completed the trial until study closure by the sponsor; 60 completed 36 months. Mean (SD) HHD UE composite score decreased from 34.3 kg (32.0) at baseline to 29.4 kg (32.6) kg at month 36 (LS mean change [95%CI]: -3.8 kg [-5.9, -1.7]; P = 0.0005). Mean (SD) HHD LE composite score decreased from 32.0 kg (34.1) at baseline to 25.5 kg (31.2) at month 36 (LS mean change [95%CI]: -4.9 [-7.7, -2.2]; P = 0.0005). GNEM-FAS scores were more severe at baseline in subjects who walked l200 meters versus ≥200 meters in 6 minutes; in both groups, GNEM-FAS total, mobility, UE, and self-care scores decreased from baseline through month 36.ConclusionsThese findings demonstrate progressive decline in muscle strength in GNE myopathy and provide insight into the appropriate tools to detect clinically meaningful changes in future GNE myopathy interventional trials.

Vidotto;A detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of young Sun-like stars can provide valuable information on our Sun's magnetic past and its impact on the early Earth. We determine the properties of the moderately rotating young Sun-like star kappa Ceti's magnetic and activity cycles using 50 years of chromospheric activity data and six epochs of spectropolarimetric observations. The chromospheric activity was determined by measuring the flux in the Ca II H and K lines. A generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram and a wavelet decomposition were used on the chromospheric activity data to establish the associated periodicities. The vector magnetic field of the star was reconstructed using the technique of Zeeman Doppler imaging on the spectropolarimetric observations. Our period analysis algorithms detect a 3.1 year chromospheric cycle in addition to the star's well-known ~6 year cycle period. Although the two cycle periods have an approximate 1:2 ratio, they exhibit an unusual temporal evolution. Additionally, the spectropolarimetric data analysis shows polarity reversals of the star's large-scale magnetic field, suggesting a ~10 year magnetic or Hale cycle. The unusual evolution of the star's chromospheric cycles and their lack of a direct correlation with the magnetic cycle establishes kappa Ceti as a curious young Sun. Such complex evolution of magnetic activity could be synonymous with moderately active young Suns, which is an evolutionary path that our own Sun could have taken. The first issue of Nature Reviews Neuroscience was published 20 years ago, in 2000. Alonso; Luxmi Poran; Ana L Pereira; Marco Marigliano;OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of underweight (UW), overweight (OW), and obesity in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D).METHODS: An international cross-sectional study including 23 026 T1D children (2-18 years, duration of diabetes ≥1 year) participating in the SWEET prospective, multicenter diabetes registry. Body mass index SD score (BMI-SDS) was calculated using the World Health Organization BMI charts. Children were categorized as UW (BMI-SDS < -2SD), OW (+1SD < BMI-SDS ≤ +2SD), and obese (OB) (BMI-SDS > +2SD). Hierarchic regression models were applied with adjustment for sex, age, and duration of diabetes.RESULTS: The prevalence of UW, OW, and obesity was: 1.4%, 22.3%, and 7.3% in males and 0.6%, 27.2%, and 6.8% in females. Adjusted BMI-SDS was significantly higher in females than in males (mean ± SEM: 0.54 ± 0.05 vs 0.40 ± 0.05, P < 0.0001). In males, BMI-SDS significantly decreased by age (P < 0.0001) in the first three age categories 0.61 ± 0.06 (2 to <10 years), 0.47 ± 0.06 (10 to <13 years), 0.34 ± 0.05 (13 to <16 years). In females, BMI-SDS showed a U-shaped distribution by age (P < 0.0001): 0.54 ± 0.04 (2 to <10 years), 0.39 ± 0.04 (10 to <13 years), 0.55 ± 0.04 (13 to <16 years). BMI-SDS increased by diabetes duration (<2 years: 0.38 ± 0.05, 2 to <5 years: 0.44 ± 0.05, and ≥5 years: 0.50 ± 0.05, P < 0.0001). Treatment modality did not affect BMI-SDS. Adjusted HbA1c was significantly higher in females than in males (8.20% ± 0.10% vs 8.06% ± 0.10%, P < 0.0001). In both genders, the association between HbA1c and BMI-SDS was U-shaped with the highest HbA1c in the UW and obesity groups.CONCLUSIONS: The high rate of OW and obesity (31.8%) emphasize the need for developing further strategies to prevent and treat excess fat accumulation in T1D.

To counter biofilms, various approaches, including prevention of bacterial surface adherence, application of device applicators, and assimilation of antimicrobials in targeted drug delivery machinery, have been utilized. These methods are also combined to achieve synergistic bacterial killing. This review discusses various multimodal technologies, presents general concepts, and describes therapies relying on the principles of electrical energy, ultrasound, photodynamics, and targeted drug delivery for prevention and treatment of biofilms.Keywords: biofilm, antimicrobial, drug carrier, hybrid technology, nanotechnology

Danailov; Dimitre Karpuzov; M Zinke-Allmang;Clusters of independently tailored areal density and size distribution were grown on semiconductor surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy and were used subsequently as masks for selective ion beam modification. Field emission scanning electron microscopy shows sharp interfaces between the amorphous area exposed to ion beams and areas of crystalline silicon covered by clusters. Partial etching of the substrate leads to narrow trenches around the initial cluster site, suggesting significantly enhanced etching near the amorphous-crystalline interface. The results are explained on the basis of a slight density variation in the substrate near the cluster periphery due to a break in symmetry of the recoil atom incorporation. Computer simulations were carried out to further characterize these results, using a program based on the well-established TRIM code to model atomic collision cascades in a matrix. The resulting density distributions correlate well with the experimentally observed wet etching patterns, strongly suggesting a relation between cluster-masking related density variations in the amorphized silicon and the etching rate.

Zell;The properties of exotic neutron-rich nuclei between the proton shell closures Z = 20 and Z = 28 are of particular interest for the understanding of the shell structure for large neutron excess. Effects related to the energy gap between the neutron fp and 1g9/2 shells lead to a strong variation of collectivity for nuclei around N = 40. Whereas 68Ni was found to have doubly magic properties, this was not observed in neighbouring nuclei. Recent shell model calculations for the neutron rich iron isotopes clearly reveal the difficulty to describe nuclei in this mass region and resulted in large deviations of the predicted collectivity depending on the valence space. However, no experimental data on the transition strength existed for the very exotic nucleus 66Fe at N = 40. Here we present the newest results on absolute transition strengths of the lowest excited states in 62,64,66Fe measured model independently using the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method. The experiments were performed at NSCL at Michigan State University with the Cologne/NSCL plunger device using Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics at energies of 80 MeV/u. Our results yield a much higher collectivity for 64,66Fe than expected and allow tests of new calculations.

Recurrent atrial tachycardia (AT) is a common phenomenon after catheter ablation for AF, particularly in the setting of additional substrate ablation, with many studies demonstrating gap-related macro re-entrant AT (predominantly mitral and roof dependent) to be the dominant mechanism. Although multiple inducible ATs after ablation of the clinical AT are commonly described at repeat procedures, the optimal ablation strategy, and procedural endpoints are unclear in this setting. A recent randomized study addressing the question of non-inducibility as a procedural endpoint demonstrated no additional benefits to the ablation of all induced, non-clinical ATs, but it was limited by small numbers and high rates of non-inducibility. Nevertheless, once ablation of the clinical AT has been successfully performed, ensuring durable linear block and PV isolation may be sufficient for the prevention of further AT. Durable linear block, particularly at the mitral isthmus, is difficult to achieve but may be facilitated by the real-time evaluation of lesion quality and contiguity and the novel technique of vein of Marshall ethanol infusion. Epsilon sequence (UUAACUUUA) has originally been found in the bacteriophage T7 gene 10 leader region. It enhances translation in Escherichia coli via base pairing with nucleotides 458-466 located in the helical domain #17 of 16S rRNA. We have recently reported that when the complementarity to 16S rRNA is extended, the epsilon is converted from an enhancer to an independent initiator of translation. Here we report the effect of two other structural parameters, positioning in mRNA and the degree of complementarity to 16S rRNA on the translation initiation activity of epsilon in E. coli cells. Our results show that epsilon displays maximal activity as a translational initiator at its natural 9-nucleotide-long complementarity to 16S rRNA and at a 16-nucleotide-long distance to the initiation codon. Under these conditions its efficiency is comparable with that of the consensus Shine-Dalgarno sequence.

Jandl; Patrick Fournier; Dimitre Dimitrov;Abstract A large magnetocaloric effect can be obtained around T N, Dy 8 K simply by spinning the orthorhombic DyMnO 3 single crystal within the cb -plane in a constant magnetic field, instead of the standard magnetization–demagnetization process. Under 7 T, the maximum rotating entropy change (−Δ S R, cb ) and the associated adiabatic temperature change (Δ T ad, cb ) are 16.3 J/kg K and 11 K, respectively. The corresponding refrigerant capacity is 440 J/kg, with no thermal and field hysteresis losses. Our findings show that the orthorhombic DyMnO 3 could be used as a good refrigerant in more compact and efficient cryomagnetocaloric refrigerators.
