    Using a model that defines the manager′s job as a core of basic skills surrounded by a variable and varying envelope of discretionary tasks, links career management to the organization′s strategy through the coaching process. The key factor is to ensure direct transfer from the “learning venue” to the “work venue”. Thus the workplace is seen as the most appropriate venue for management development, an activity related directly to career management.

    In this paper, we extend recent results of adaptive extremum seeking control to a class of nonlinear distributed parameter system. We address the real-time optimization of a chemical reaction that occurs in a tubular reactor described by a hyperbolic set of partial differential equations. An estimation and a control algorithm that take into account temperature constraints are developed based on a Lyapunov functional. The result of this algorithm is a late-lumping feedback profile control that steers the system to its optimum.

    Authors: Helene, Volkoff; Angela Joy, Eykelbosh; Richard Ector, Peter;

    To assess the role of leptin on food intake regulation in goldfish, we examined the effects of central (intracerebroventricular, ICV) and peripheral (intraperitoneal, IP) injections of recombinant murine leptin on feeding behavior. Centrally (100 ng/g) and peripherally (300 ng/g) injected leptin both caused a significant decrease in food intake, compared to the saline-treated controls. To test the hypothesis that leptin influenced orexigenic neuropeptide systems in goldfish, fish were co-injected with neuropeptide Y (NPY) or orexin A and leptin. Both NPY (5 ng/g) and orexin A (10 ng/g) significantly increased food intake. Fish co-injected ICV with NPY (5 ng/g) or orexin A (10 ng/g) and leptin (1 or 10 ng/g) had a food intake lower than that of fish treated with NPY or orexin A alone. NPY mRNA expression in goldfish brain was reduced 2 and 6 h following central injection of leptin. To test the hypothesis that the cholecystokinin (CCK) mediates the effects of leptin in goldfish, fish were simultaneously injected ICV with an ineffective dose of leptin (10 ng/g) and either ICV or IP with an ineffective doses of CCK (1 ng/g ICV or 25 ng/g IP). These fish had a food intake lower than vehicle-treated fish, suggesting that leptin potentiates the satiety actions of CCK. CCK hypothalamic mRNA expression was increased 2 h following central treatment with leptin. The CCK receptor antagonist proglumide blocked both central and peripheral CCK satiety effects. Blockade of CCK brain receptors by proglumide resulted in an inhibition of the leptin-induced decrease in food intake and an attenuation of the inhibiting action of leptin on both NPY- and orexin A-induced feeding. These data suggests that CCK has a role in mediating the effects of leptin on food intake. Fasting potentiated the actions of leptin and attenuated the effects of CCK. Whereas fasting had no effects on the brain mRNA expression of CCK, it increased the brain mRNA expression of NPY and decreased the expression of CART. These changes in neuropeptide expression were partially reversed when fish were treated ICV with leptin. These results provide strong evidence that, in goldfish, leptin influences food intake, in part by modulating the orexigenic effects of NPY and orexin and that its actions are mediated, at least in part, by CCK.

    In this paper, we propose a novel framework for replacing advertisement contents in soccer videos with an automatic way by using deep learning strategies. We begin by applying UNET (an image segmentation convolutional neural network technique) for content segmentation and detection. Subsequently, after reconstructing the segmented content in the video frames (considering the apparent loss in detection), we will replace the unwanted content by new one using a homography mapping procedure. Furthermore, the replacement key points in each frame will be tracked into the next frames considering the camera zoom-in and zoom-out controlling. Since the movement of objects in video can disrupt the alignment between frames and correspondingly make the homography matrix calculation erroneous, we use Mask R-CNN to mask and remove the moving objects from the scene. Such framework is denominated as REP-Model which stands for a replacing model.

    Ignition tests were conducted with delayed and fluid petroleum cokes, a high volatile bituminous coal and their blends in bench- and pilot-scale fluidized bed combustors. In the bench-scale FBC tests, a visual inspection ignition criterion was developed based on the ‘CO–CO2’ profiles obtained as a function of time and bed temperature. In the pilot-scale unit, the rapid increase in SO2 levels was used as the indicator of fuel ignition. In addition to the fluidized bed ignition tests, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements were made on all fuels and their chars. The results showed that, while the fluid coke (which has the lowest volatile content) was the most difficult to ignite, ignition was not a simple function of volatile content. Further, different test methods and ignition criteria demonstrated significantly different ignition temperatures, with the largest variation arising between bench- and pilot-scale equipment. Finally, tests on mixtures of petroleum coke and coal showed that there was no interaction between these two fuels, and that the coke ignited only when it achieved its own ignition temperature.

    Exhausting activity in the sea raven resulted in a pronounced extracellular acidosis, which consisted of a large, short-lived respiratory component and a small, longer-lived metabolic component. Thi disturbance had been corrected by 12 h. White muscle experienced a pronounced intracellular acidosis of chiefly metabolic origin, with pHi dropping from a resting value of 7.51 to a low of 7.10 immediately post-activity. The recovery of pHi was associated with a reduction in muscle lactate. Despite the large increase in $$P_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} } $$ , cardiac muscle pHi remained constant postactivity, actually showing an alkalosis at 30 min into recovery. Maintenance of cardiac muscle pHi was achieved by an accumulation of HCO 3 − intracellularly.

    AbstractGroundwater samples were collected from 60 piezometers and 23 domestic wells from March 1991 to April 1992 as part of a study to quantify NO−3 and pesticide contamination of the Abbotsford Aquifer, located in the lower Fraser Valley, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. A new contaminant, 1,2,2‐trichloropropane (1,2,2‐TCP), was detected and confirmed in 296 of the 514 samples by purge and trap GC/MS, and its concentration was determined in 150 of the samples collected between January and April 1992. The contaminant was detected in 34 (57%) of the piezometers sampled, and 10 (44%) of the domestic wells sampled. Mean 1,2,2‐TCP concentration (±1 SD) was 0.12 ± 0.11 µg L−1 in 123 piezometer samples and 0.14 ± 0.09 µg L−1 in 27 domestic well samples. The highest 1,2,2‐TCP concentrations measured were 0.62 and 0.32 µg L−1 for piezometers and domestic wells, respectively. The probable nonpoint sources of the contaminant are the synthetic pesticides, Telone (mixture of 1,3‐dichloropropene and 1,2‐dichloropropane) and Telone II (1,3‐dichloropropene), used to control pathogenic nematodes in raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) production. Analyses of Telone and Telone II confirmed the presence of 1,2,2‐TCP as impurities in both products. The study demonstrates that an impurity present in pesticide formulations in trace quantities, which is persistent in soil and water, has the potential to result in significant groundwater contamination under the appropriate soil and climatic conditions.

    Background – A child whose left temporal lobe contained mesial, anterior and basal structures but lacked superio-lateral cortex had intractable epilepsy secondary to a porencephalic cyst. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) shows equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) as dipole modeling for temporal lobe epilepsy rather than in an exact location. Aim – We hypothesized that the magnetic fields generated by the epileptic discharges in mesio-basal temporal areas could be detected by MEG without interference from the superio-lateral temporal cortices. Methods – We analyzed MEG spikes using single dipole analysis and synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM), and compared with EEG spike topography. Results – Two MEG ECDs corresponding to T3 spikes localized to the anterior mesio-basal temporal region with vertical orientation. Sixteen MEG ECDs corresponding to T5 spikes localized to the middle to posterior mesio-basal temporal region with vertical orientation. SAM revealed maximum current density at hippocampus and anterior fusiform gyrus for T3 spikes, and at posterior hippocampus and fusiform gyrus for T5 spikes. Conclusion – Vertically oriented ECDs were obtained without superio-lateral temporal cortices because of temporo-parieto-occipital porencephalic cyst. The absence of superio-lateral temporal cortices, prominent temporal EEG spikes, less prominent MEG spikes, and mesio-basal SAM spikes indicated that the vertically oriented ECDs were projected directly from the mesio-basal temporal region.

    This descriptive study examined the differences in beliefs and social influences between patients who decided to quit or to continue smoking following diagnosis of chronic peripheral vascular disease. A consecutive quota sample of 20 patients who had quit smoking (quitters) and 22 who had continued smoking (continuers) agreed to participate in the study. There were no statistically significant differences between quitters and continuers in demographic characteristics, clinical variables and perceived social influences. Statistically significant differences were found between groups in beliefs about and attitudes towards the risk of continued smoking. These findings underline the need to investigate more fully the factors which influence patients' decisions to quit or to continue smoking. Further investigation may also provide detailed information on the role of risk perception in influencing this decision‐making process.

    Authors: Helene, Volkoff; Angela Joy, Eykelbosh; Richard Ector, Peter;
