The mineral, Slavikite, has had a dynamically evolving chemical composition and structure since its first discovery and classification on Valachov Hill, Bohemia in 1926. The most recent formula for this hydrated sulfate, collected from Wiesciszowice, SW Poland, consists of magnesium, ferric iron, sulphate, water, and hydronium; (H3O+)3Mg6Fe15(SO4)21(OH)18 98H2O. The subject of this study is a sample of Slavikite from Faro, Yukon; The presence of the mineral is a result of the oxidation of mine waste originating from the zinc-lead mine. Due to the occurrence of Slavikite in a system with a high abundance of zinc, it was thought that there may have been zinc replacement accommodated into the structure. Though a chemical analysis via EDS on the SEM did not find zinc in appreciable amounts, there are variations in the accepted magnesium-iron ratio. The latest study on Slavikite proposed a 2:5 ratio of magnesium to ferric iron, whereas this work has found deviations, namely with higher levels of magnesium. The recognized proposal for structure consists of alternating layers of iron and magnesium composition; Fe-O-OH, Fe-O-OH-H2O, and [Mg(H2O)6]2+ respectively. The crystallographic arrangement proposed is only a potential structure, as the resolution of a more definitive arrangement is limited by the instability of hydrated sulfates upon analysis. Qualitatively, the SEM images from Faro, show hexagonal plates similar to SEM images from Slavikite in Wiesciszowice, but with smaller crystals corresponding to elevated magnesium. Variations in chemistry and increased unit cell size based on Rietveld refinement, give evidence toward magnesium replacement of iron in this system. If enough magnesium is to be found, a magnesium bearing end-member of this sulfate group could be present. Oxidation of the sample has shown that there may be ferrous iron incorporated into the Faro slavikite as well as ferric iron. This would change the accepted structure of slavikite, but further analysis must be conducted to determine the nature of the iron in Faro, Yukon.
