    BackgroundAtrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent cause of cardiovascular morbidity, including thromboembolism and heart failure. Left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) detected in AF patients may be either precursor or consequence of the arrythmia. Successful cardioversion of chronic AF is often followed by a transient period of left atrial (LA) stunning, where depressed mechanical atrial contraction persists despite reinstitution of sinus rhythm. To determine if AF-associated LVD would improve with resolution of LA dysfunction, AF patients were examined immediately and 4 weeks after cardioversion to sinus rhythm. 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) assesses ventricular function according to the volumes and energetics of functional components of the LV volume. Previously, described 4D CMR markers of LVD include decreased volume and end-diastolic kinetic energy (KE) of the Direct flow, which is the portion of LV volume that passes directly from inflow to outflow in a single cycle. We hypothesize that impaired LV flow patterns and energetics will be found immediately after cardioversion during atrial stunning, and that those parameters will improve as atrial function returns.MethodsTen patients with a history of AF underwent CMR 2–3 h (Time-1) and 4 weeks (Time-2), following electrical cardioversion to sinus rhythm. 4D phase-contrast velocity data and morphological images were acquired at a 3T CMR system. Using a previously evaluated method, pathlines were emitted from the LV end diastolic volume (LVEDV) and traced forward and backward in time until end-systole. The LVEDV was automatically separated into four functional flow components whose volume and KE were calculated.ResultsLeft atrial fractional area change increased over the follow-up period (P = 0.001), indicating recovery of LA mechanical function. LVEF increased between Time-1 and Time-2 (P = 0.003); LVEDVI did not change (P = 0.319). Over that interval, the ratios of Direct flow/LVEDV volume and KE increased (P = 0.001 and P = 0.003, respectively), while the ratios of Residual volume/LVEDV volume and KE decreased (P = 0.001 and P = 0.005, respectively).ConclusionPost-cardioversion recovery of LA function was associated with improvements in conventional and 4D CMR markers of LV function. Flow-specific measures demonstrate the negative but potentially reversible impact of LA dysfunction on volume and energetic aspects of LV function.

    Adsorption and dissociation of hydrocarbons on metallic surfaces represent crucial steps to carburization of metal. Here, we use density functional theory total energy calculations with the climbing-image nudged elastic band method to estimate the adsorption energies and dissociation barriers for different CO coverages with surface supercells of different sizes. For the absorption of CO, the contribution from van der Waals interaction in the computation of adsorption parameters is found important in small systems with high CO-coverages. The dissociation process involves carbon insertion into the Fe surface causing a lattice deformation that requires a larger surface system for unrestricted relaxation. We show that, in larger surface systems associated with dilute CO-coverages, the dissociation barrier is significantly decreased. The elastic deformation of the surface is generic and can potentially applicable for all similar metal-hydrocarbon reactions and therefore a dilute coverage is necessary for the simulation of these reactions as isolated processes.     Esta contribución tiene por objetivo analizar las posibles evoluciones de los modelos «prescriptivos» de la búsqueda de información, en función de los aportes conceptuales de la noción de transalfabetización en el campo de la information literacy (alfabetización informacional). Se abordan las modificaciones de los referenciales tradicionales de dominio de la alfabetización informacional, así como dos propuestas inéditas: el modelo estadounidense Metaliteracy (metalfabetización) y el modelo inglés InFlow (information flow; flujo informacional). Estos dos modelos no reivindican explícitamente la postura transalfabética, aunque pueden detectarse puntos de confluencia que renuevan en profundidad los dispositivos de desarrollo de habilidades informativas, así como el fundamento teórico que los respalda. Cette contribution vise à interroger les évolutions possibles des modèles « prescriptifs » de la recherche d’information au vu des apports conceptuels de la notion de translittératie au champ de l’information literacy. Y sont abordées les transformations des référentiels de maîtrise de l’information traditionnels ainsi que deux propositions inédites : le modèle américain Metaliteracy et le modèle anglais InFlow (information flow). Ces deux modèles ne se revendiquent pas explicitement de l’approche translittératique même si des points de jonction forts peuvent être repérés qui renouvellent en profondeur les dispositifs de formation à l’information ainsi que l’arrière-plan théorique qui les sous-tend. The purpose of this article is to examine the possible evolution of the prescriptive models used for information research in the light of the concepts associated with transliteracy in the field of information literacy. The modifications made to the reference guides used for the mastery of traditional information as well as two unpublished proposals are considered; the American model of metaliteracy and the English model of InFlow (information flow). Both models do not explicitly advocate a transliteral approach even though they share several points in common that renew the information training methods as well as the theory that support them.

    Mood and anxiety disorders are complex heterogeneous syndromes that manifest in dysfunctions across multiple brain regions, cell types, and circuits. Biomarkers using brain-wide activity patterns in humans have proven useful in distinguishing between disorder subtypes and identifying effective treatments. In order to improve biomarker identification, it is crucial to understand the basic circuitry underpinning brain-wide activity patterns. Leveraging a large repertoire of techniques, animal studies have examined roles of specific cell types and circuits in driving maladaptive behavior. Recent advances in multiregion recording techniques, data-driven analysis approaches, and machine-learning-based behavioral analysis tools can further push the boundary of animal studies and bridge the gap with human studies, to assess how brain-wide activity patterns encode and drive emotional behavior. Together, these efforts will allow identifying more precise biomarkers to enhance diagnosis and treatment.

    Over the last decade, there have been a significant amount of research works on compoundrenewal risk models with dependence. These risk models assume a dependence relation betweeninterclaim times and claim amounts. In this paper, we pursue their investigation.Weapply change of measure techniques within the compound renewal risk models with dependenceto obtain exact expressions for the Gerber–Shiu discounted penalty function. Wepropose a more general approach than the usual one based on the random walk associatedto the risk process as it is presented in the literature. More refined, our method keeps theembedded information in the sequence of claim amounts and interclaim times and enablesus to derive an exact expression for the Gerber–Shiu discounted penalty function. Simulationis one of the advantages of change of measure techniques since we can find a new probabilitymeasure under which ruin occurs almost surely. In this paper, we investigate theimportance sampling method based on change of measure techniques to compute severalruin measures.     La catégorie d’empowerment devient omniprésente quand il s’agit de participation. Pourtant, peu de travaux en ont exploré sociologiquement les contours, les propriétés et la portée. Il s’agit de prendre distance avec une approche unidimensionnelle de la catégorie, qui l’appréhende comme une solution démocratique ou une régression liée à un usage managérial. Notre démarche comparative élargie considère plusieurs espaces-temps, ce qui permet de rendre compte de deux manières très différentes de penser le pouvoir et d’agir sur des capacités. Cet article interroge deux conceptions de l’empowerment, soit deux philosophies du pouvoir sous-jacentes : une gestionnaire et une civique. Pour saisir les conceptions gestionnaires de l’empowerment, notre article s’appuie sur un spectre allant du cas spécifique de la Banque mondiale (Empowerment Team) à plusieurs acteurs de la santé en relation avec les institutions européennes. Concernant les conceptions civiques de l’empowerment, l’enquête repose sur le mouvement des droits civiques aux États-Unis et le Blackpower dans les années 1960, tout en s’interrogeant sur l’héritage contemporain. The notion of empowerment has become widespread, and is frequently used when participation is considered. However, little research has explored the properties, scope, and borders of empowerment in sociological terms. This paper goes beyond a one-dimensional approach of empowerment, which treats it as a democratic solution or as regression due to its managerial use. By adopting a broadly comparative approach, we consider several space-times, that which enables us to account for two different ways of thinking about the power and the power to act on capacities. This article examines two concepts of empowerment using two philosophies of power: one managerial and the other civic. In analyzing managerial concepts of empowerment, our paper looks at cases ranging from the World Bank (Empowerment Team) to various players in health care politics in relation to European institutions. Concerning the civic concepts of empowerment, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the Black power in the sixties are tested, while the contemporary legacy is questioned.

    Bees are thought to be strict users of carbohydrates as metabolic fuel for flight. Many insects, however, have the ability to oxidize the amino acid proline at a high rate, which is a unique feature of this group of animals. The presence of proline in the haemolymph of bees and in the nectar of plants led to the hypothesis that plants may produce proline as a metabolic reward for pollinators. We investigated flight muscle metabolism of hymenopteran species using high-resolution respirometry performed on permeabilized muscle fibres. The muscle fibres of the honeybee,Apis mellifera, do not have a detectable capacity to oxidize proline, as those from the migratory locust,Locusta migratoria, used here as an outgroup representative. The closely related bumblebee,Bombus impatiens, can oxidize proline alone and more than doubles its respiratory capacity when proline is combined with carbohydrate-derived substrates. A distant wasp species,Vespula vulgaris, exhibits the same metabolic phenotype as the bumblebee, suggesting that proline oxidation is common in hymenopterans. Using a combination of mitochondrial substrates and inhibitors, we further show that inB. impatiens, proline oxidation provides reducing equivalents and electrons directly to the electron transport system. Together, these findings demonstrate that some bee and wasp species can greatly enhance the oxidation of carbohydrates using proline as fuel for flight.

    Abstract Glass forming ability (GFA) of Mg-Zn alloys with Sr addition has been experimentally studied coupled with CALPHAD method. Two series of metallic glasses (MGs), Mg98−xZnxSr2 (x = 38, 36, 33, 30, 28) and Mg95−xZnxSr5 (x = 37, 33, 30, 27, 23), were designed and prepared successfully for the first time. The crystallization characteristics of these MGs were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD). All results indicate that the extraordinary GFA should locate at the composition regions of Mg68Zn27Sr5 to Mg60Zn35Sr5 for Mg95−xZnxSr5, and Mg68Zn30Sr2 to Mg64Zn34Sr2 for Mg98−xZnxSr2, respectively.

    BackgroundAtrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent cause of cardiovascular morbidity, including thromboembolism and heart failure. Left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) detected in AF patients may be either precursor or consequence of the arrythmia. Successful cardioversion of chronic AF is often followed by a transient period of left atrial (LA) stunning, where depressed mechanical atrial contraction persists despite reinstitution of sinus rhythm. To determine if AF-associated LVD would improve with resolution of LA dysfunction, AF patients were examined immediately and 4 weeks after cardioversion to sinus rhythm. 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) assesses ventricular function according to the volumes and energetics of functional components of the LV volume. Previously, described 4D CMR markers of LVD include decreased volume and end-diastolic kinetic energy (KE) of the Direct flow, which is the portion of LV volume that passes directly from inflow to outflow in a single cycle. We hypothesize that impaired LV flow patterns and energetics will be found immediately after cardioversion during atrial stunning, and that those parameters will improve as atrial function returns.MethodsTen patients with a history of AF underwent CMR 2–3 h (Time-1) and 4 weeks (Time-2), following electrical cardioversion to sinus rhythm. 4D phase-contrast velocity data and morphological images were acquired at a 3T CMR system. Using a previously evaluated method, pathlines were emitted from the LV end diastolic volume (LVEDV) and traced forward and backward in time until end-systole. The LVEDV was automatically separated into four functional flow components whose volume and KE were calculated.ResultsLeft atrial fractional area change increased over the follow-up period (P = 0.001), indicating recovery of LA mechanical function. LVEF increased between Time-1 and Time-2 (P = 0.003); LVEDVI did not change (P = 0.319). Over that interval, the ratios of Direct flow/LVEDV volume and KE increased (P = 0.001 and P = 0.003, respectively), while the ratios of Residual volume/LVEDV volume and KE decreased (P = 0.001 and P = 0.005, respectively).ConclusionPost-cardioversion recovery of LA function was associated with improvements in conventional and 4D CMR markers of LV function. Flow-specific measures demonstrate the negative but potentially reversible impact of LA dysfunction on volume and energetic aspects of LV function.

    Adsorption and dissociation of hydrocarbons on metallic surfaces represent crucial steps to carburization of metal. Here, we use density functional theory total energy calculations with the climbing-image nudged elastic band method to estimate the adsorption energies and dissociation barriers for different CO coverages with surface supercells of different sizes. For the absorption of CO, the contribution from van der Waals interaction in the computation of adsorption parameters is found important in small systems with high CO-coverages. The dissociation process involves carbon insertion into the Fe surface causing a lattice deformation that requires a larger surface system for unrestricted relaxation. We show that, in larger surface systems associated with dilute CO-coverages, the dissociation barrier is significantly decreased. The elastic deformation of the surface is generic and can potentially applicable for all similar metal-hydrocarbon reactions and therefore a dilute coverage is necessary for the simulation of these reactions as isolated processes.
