The Mackenzie River system is an important feature of the Northwest Territories (NWT). Students in the NWT schools could benefit from the support of curriculum resources to develop their knowledge about the Mackenzie River. Using the process of Human-Centred Design as a theoretical framework, I interviewed ten NWT teachers as potential end users of an online resource for learning about the Mackenzie River. The data from the teacher interviews was used to create a list of design criteria for a website-based educational resource on the Mackenzie River. In partnership with the Northwest Territories Department of Education, Culture and Employment and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC), I created a prototype website in which students can make a virtual river journey while meeting the requirements of the Grade 4 curriculum. The teachers who were originally interviewed then reviewed the prototype and made further recommendations for a final version of the website.

This inquiry brought together young people aged 15-24 and arts organizations to explore how arts organizations in Victoria could be more responsive to young people’s lived realities, needs, and aspirations. The question guiding this inquiry was: How might the courageous imaginations of young people inform the future of arts organizations in Victoria? This action research inquiry was informed by the tenets of Participatory Action Research, Youth Participatory Action Research, and Critical Participatory Action Research. It employed arts-based methods and small group dialogues to explore the benefits, constraints, and possibilities for the future of arts organizations. The inquiry concludes with six action-oriented recommendations to support arts organizations to actively engage young people in the arts and live into young people’s aspirations for the radical transformation of arts organizations in the future.

Just over 10 years ago, the Ontario government passed legislation that resulted in baccalaureate degree-granting status for provincial community colleges. Since this fundamental shift in college credential delivery, the numbers of programs, students and graduates have continued to grow, and are expected to continue to do so. While employers were not an obvious driver behind this shift, understanding their expectations and perceptions as they pertain to these degree programs and graduates is critical for Ontario colleges and students. This research involved interviews with Greater Toronto Area employers who have hired college degree graduates. The interviews demonstrated that, while there is still a general lack of knowledge about college degrees, employers find value in the programs and essentially envision themselves as partners who can play a greater role in future program development and ongoing review. This includes having an impact on curriculum, graduate expectations, work experience opportunities and identifying skill gaps.
