Gauge field configurations with nontrivial topological windings are known to play crucial roles in many important phenomena, from matter-antimatter asymmetry of today’s universe to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong interaction. Their presence is, however, elusive for direct detection in experiments. Here we show that measurements of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions can be used for accessing the topological fluctuations of the non-Abelian gauge fields in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD). To achieve this, we implemented a key ingredient, the stochastic dynamics of gauge field topological fluctuations, into a state-of-the-art framework for simulating the CME in these collisions. This new framework provides the necessary tool to quantify initial topological fluctuations from any definitive CME signal to be extracted from experimental data. It also reveals a universal scaling relation between initial topological fluctuations and particle multiplicity produced in the corresponding collision events.

However, the vast majority of workplace violence studies have employed cross-sectional and correlational research, designed to examine immediate reactions after being assaulted at work. Aims: To explore whether exposure to robbery as a traumatic event may contribute to the onset of typical symptoms of psychological distress (anxiety depression, dysphoria and loss of confidence) and job dissatisfaction over time. Methods: We collected data by using a two-wave panel design, in which employees working the days of bank robberies, in an Italian bank, filled in a questionnaire between 48 h and 1 week after the robbery (T1) and 2 months after the robbery (T2). We performed structural equation models to evaluate the fit of different models to our data. Results: There were 513 participants at T1 (58% women) and 175 (34%) participants at T2 (62% women). There was a simultaneous association in which psychological distress leads to job dissatisfaction both following robbery and 2 months later. Conclusions: Our findings support a synchronous effects model and suggest that interventions after suffering physical assaults, apart from helping employees to recover their health, should consider restoring their trust and confidence in the organization. This study contributes to understanding the dynamic relationships between a robbery at work and its outcomes over time, by addressing several methodological deficiencies in previous longitudinal studies. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

Leslie; Arnoldo Frigessi;We consider the problem of recommending relevant content to users of an internet platform in the form of lists of items, called slates. We introduce a variational Bayesian Recurrent Neural Net recommender system that acts on time series of interactions between the internet platform and the user, and which scales to real world industrial situations. The recommender system is tested both online on real users, and on an offline dataset collected from a Norwegian web-based marketplace, FINN.no, that is made public for research. This is one of the first publicly available datasets which includes all the slates that are presented to users as well as which items (if any) in the slates were clicked on. Such a data set allows us to move beyond the common assumption that implicitly assumes that users are considering all possible items at each interaction. Instead we build our likelihood using the items that are actually in the slate, and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches theoretically and in experiments. We also introduce a hierarchical prior for the item parameters based on group memberships. Both item parameters and user preferences are learned probabilistically. Furthermore, we combine our model with bandit strategies to ensure learning, and introduce `in-slate Thompson Sampling' which makes use of the slates to maximise explorative opportunities. We show experimentally that explorative recommender strategies perform on par or above their greedy counterparts. Even without making use of exploration to learn more effectively, click rates increase simply because of improved diversity in the recommended slates. We find that the total cross-section is indeed converging for neutrino energies up to 20 MeV, and thus our calculations can provide constraints on theoretical uncertainties for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Using an experiment replicated in 57 grasslands on six continents, with contrasting evolutionary history of grazing, we tested how resources (mean annual precipitation and soil nutrients) determine herbivore exclusion effects on plant diversity, richness and evenness. Here we show that at sites with a long history of ungulate grazing, herbivore exclusion reduced plant diversity by reducing both richness and evenness and the responses of richness and diversity to herbivore exclusion decreased with mean annual precipitation. At sites with a short history of grazing, the effects of herbivore exclusion were not related to precipitation but differed for native and exotic plant richness. Thus, plant species’ evolutionary history of grazing continues to shape the response of the world’s grasslands to changing mammalian herbivory.

Priddey; Colin Borys; Jose Afonso;We present mid/far-infrared photometry of nine FeLoBAL QSOs, taken using the Spitzer space telescope. All nine objects are extremely bright in the infrared, with rest-frame 1-1000 micron luminosities comparable to those of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. Furthermore, a significant fraction of the infrared emission from many, and possibly all of the sample is likely to arise from star formation, with star formation rates of order several hundred solar masses per year. We combine these results with previous work to propose that FeLoBALs mark galaxies and QSOs in which an extremely luminous starburst is approaching its end, and in which a rapidly accreting supermassive black hole is in the last stages of casting off its dust cocoon. FeLoBAL signatures in high redshift QSOs and galaxies may thus be an efficient way of selecting sources at a critical point in their evolution. Comment: 12 pages, two figures, two tables. While annihilation to photons through quark loops is often considered in indirect detection searches, such loop-level effects are usually neglected in direct detection, as they are typically subdominant to tree-level dark matter-nucleus scattering. However, when dark matter is lighter than around 100 MeV, it carries so little momentum that it is difficult to detect with nuclear recoils at all. We show that loops of low-energy hadronic states can generate an effective dark matter-photon coupling, and thus lead to scattering with electrons even in the absence of tree-level dark matter-electron scattering. For light mediators, this leads to an effective fractional electric charge which may be very strongly constrained by astrophysical observations. Current and upcoming searches for dark matter-electron scattering can thus set limits on dark matter-proton interactions down to 1 MeV and below. Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Wesley;We study cosmological perturbations produced by the most general two-derivative actions involving two scalar fields, coupled to Einstein gravity, with an arbitrary field space metric, that admit scaling solutions. For contracting universes, we show that scale-invariant adiabatic perturbations can be produced continuously as modes leave the horizon for any equation of state parameter $w \ge 0$. The corresponding background solutions are unstable, which we argue is a universal feature of contracting models that yield scale-invariant spectra. For expanding universes, we find that nearly scale-invariant adiabatic perturbation spectra can only be produced for $w \approx -1$, and that the corresponding scaling solutions are attractors. The presence of a nontrivial metric on field space is a crucial ingredient in our results. Gauge field configurations with nontrivial topological windings are known to play crucial roles in many important phenomena, from matter-antimatter asymmetry of today’s universe to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong interaction. Their presence is, however, elusive for direct detection in experiments. Here we show that measurements of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions can be used for accessing the topological fluctuations of the non-Abelian gauge fields in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD). To achieve this, we implemented a key ingredient, the stochastic dynamics of gauge field topological fluctuations, into a state-of-the-art framework for simulating the CME in these collisions. This new framework provides the necessary tool to quantify initial topological fluctuations from any definitive CME signal to be extracted from experimental data. It also reveals a universal scaling relation between initial topological fluctuations and particle multiplicity produced in the corresponding collision events.

However, the vast majority of workplace violence studies have employed cross-sectional and correlational research, designed to examine immediate reactions after being assaulted at work. Aims: To explore whether exposure to robbery as a traumatic event may contribute to the onset of typical symptoms of psychological distress (anxiety depression, dysphoria and loss of confidence) and job dissatisfaction over time. Methods: We collected data by using a two-wave panel design, in which employees working the days of bank robberies, in an Italian bank, filled in a questionnaire between 48 h and 1 week after the robbery (T1) and 2 months after the robbery (T2). We performed structural equation models to evaluate the fit of different models to our data. Results: There were 513 participants at T1 (58% women) and 175 (34%) participants at T2 (62% women). There was a simultaneous association in which psychological distress leads to job dissatisfaction both following robbery and 2 months later. Conclusions: Our findings support a synchronous effects model and suggest that interventions after suffering physical assaults, apart from helping employees to recover their health, should consider restoring their trust and confidence in the organization. This study contributes to understanding the dynamic relationships between a robbery at work and its outcomes over time, by addressing several methodological deficiencies in previous longitudinal studies. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion
