We study the effect OCR errors have on named entity recognition (NER) and show that in a random sample of documents picked from several historical text collections, 30.6% of false negative commodity and location mentions and 13.3% of all manually annotated commodity and location mentions contain OCR errors. We introduce a simple method for estimating text quality of OCRed text and examine how well human raters can evaluate it. We also illustrate how automatic text quality estimation compares to manual rating with the aim of determining a quality threshold below which documents could potentially be discarded or would require extensive correction first. This work was conducted during the Trading Consequences project which focussed on text mining and visualisation of historical documents for the study of nineteenth century trade.

However, game atmosphere has been neither operationalized nor clearly defined in games user research literature, making it difficult to study. We define game atmosphere as the emerging subjective experience of a player caused by the strong audiovisual thematic cohesion (i.e., the harmonic fit of sounds and graphics to a shared theme) of video game elements. We studied players' experience of thematic cohesion in two between-subjects, independent-measures experiments (N=109) across four conditions differing in their level of audiovisual thematic fit. Participants' experiences were assessed with physiological and psychometric measurements to understand the effect of game atmosphere on player experience. Results indicate that a lack of thematic fit between audio and visuals lowers the degree of perceived atmosphere, but that while audiovisual thematic dissonance may lead to higher-intensity negative-valence facial events, it does not impact self-reported player experience or immersion.

Self-reported data, from Eurostat for example, report access rather than actual usage and are of limited use. What respondents report does not necessarily correspond with their actual smartphone usage behaviour in everyday life. We therefore conducted a tracking study to gain insight into smartphone usage among older adults. Smartphone activity logs were collected from individuals aged 60–79 (N = 303) throughout a period of 28 days between February and May 2019 in Canada, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. The data thus obtained on actual smartphone use were critically examined in the light of seven myths related to the smart phone usage of older people in everyday life. We also analysed the data in the context of empirical studies in the field of older people’s digital behaviour. Finally, after drawing our conclusions, we present limitations and sketch implications for future research.

One important task in these applications is to render the acoustics of the distant room for the telepresence system user. This paper presents a fast method for the room geometry acquisition and its representation with a 3D point-cloud model, as well as utilization of such a model for the room acoustics simulations. A room is scanned with a commercially available input device (Kinect for Xbox360) in two different ways; the first one involves the device placed in the middle of the room and rotated around the vertical axis while for the second one the device is moved within the room. Benefits of both approaches were analyzed. The device's depth sensor provides a set of points in a three-dimensional coordinate system which represents scanned surfaces of the room interior. These data are used to build a 3D point-cloud model of the room. Several models are created to meet requirements of different room acoustics simulation algorithms: plane fitting and uniform voxel grid for geometric methods and triangulation mesh for the numerical methods. Advantages of the proposed method over the traditional approaches are discussed. Telepresence applications require communication with the feeling of being together and sharing the same environment.

We describe an approach that starts from a small, manually created word list of commodities traded in the nineteenth century, and then uses semantic web techniques to augment the list by an order of magnitude, drawing on data stored in DBpedia. This work was conducted during the Trading Consequences project on text mining and visualisation of historical documents for the study of global trading in the British empire.
