Thirty participants in grades 10 through 12 participated in semi-structured interviews either through instant messaging or in-person. Results indicated that interviews conducted online produced fewer words and took longer to complete, and involved more rapport-building, however, there were no mean differences in the level of self-disclosure and the formality of the interviews, nor in the number and kind of themes that emerged or in the depth to which the themes were discussed. The findings suggest that despite taking longer and producing fewer words, data quality is unaffected by the mode of data collection (online versus face-to-face).

Henke;Abstract As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to grow in proficiency, the potential for AI to be used as team members rather than tools is becoming closer to realization. This advancement is driving new research investigations into the applicability of human-human teamwork knowledge to the context of human-autonomy teaming. In the current study, we apply qualitative methods to explore how the perceived composition of a team (how many humans and how many agents on the team) affects sentiments toward teammates, team processes, cognitive states, and the emergence of a system of team cognition. A total of 46 teams completed a teamwork simulation task and were interviewed afterwards regarding their teamwork experience. All of the teams were comprised of only humans; however, two conditions were led to believe that their teammate(s) were autonomous agents. Interviews were analyzed using grounded theory and the Gioia methodology, which revealed thematic differences between the team compositions. In light of our results, we offer a new model that describes how early-stage action teams achieve effective team processes and emergent cognitive states.

The current study examines the sharing and disclosure of bullying experiences through the use of Twitter data by including keywords that capture both face-to-face and cyberbullying experiences. Using human coded tweets and supervised machine learning, the study considers the role of the author in bullying-related tweets, identifies different types of bullying, analyzes why someone would share a bullying episode on Twitter, and examines the temporal patterns of bullying-related tweets. The study analyzed 847,548 tweets collected between August 7, 2019, and March 31, 2020. The results revealed that most of the tweets were shared from the perspective of the victim, included both general and online bullying, and the most common reason for posting was to report or to self-disclose. Bullying-related tweets were significantly longer than the average tweet and high profile incidents prompted an increase in posts. The results suggest that while Twitter may be a venue for bullying, it is also a space where users can find cathartic discussion and support. This study highlights ways that researchers, educators, and policymakers can utilize Twitter as a medium for positive change and harness machine learning to inform policy and anti-bullying initiatives.

High rates of suicide, depression, and substance abuse are prevalent among Indigenous people, especially youth. Research has reported that many Indigenous communities have adopted and are keen to adopt digital technologies, which have shown potential to provide e-mental health (eMH) resources for Indigenous people. By conducting a systematic literature review, this article examines the impact of Indigenous people's interactions with digital media on their mental health and wellbeing. The twenty-seven empirical studies included in this review were conducted with Indigenous participants primarily across four countries. We analyzed the studies' research objectives and respective instruments to measure the impact of an array of digital technologies adopted by Indigenous people for their mental health needs or used in Indigenous-specific eMH programs. This paper reports on themes found in the peer-reviewed literature, including Indigenous people and other stakeholders' perspectives on eMH and the viability of its implementation. The findings suggest that digital technologies can be effective in aiding the provision and improvement of Indigenous mental health services, particularly when applying decolonizing, culturally appropriate approaches. This review provides insights for researchers, health professionals, and educators to develop and implement innovative eMH resources for Indigenous communities.

This study examines the relationships between mindset, critical feedback-seeking, and learning. Undergraduate students (n = 155) at a University in Western Canada completed a mindset pre-test, played an online assessment game in which they designed three posters, and completed a post-test measuring their learning of graphic design principles. For each poster, the game tracked students’ choices to seek confirmatory or critical feedback and to revise their posters, as well as their poster performance. Findings show that the more the students seek critical feedback, the more they revise their posters and the better they perform across the game. Theoretical implications resulting from mediation analyses indicate that revision fully explains the link between critical feedback-seeking and performance. Moreover, moderation analyses of mindset revealed differential results on the relationship between critical feedback-seeking and learning, depending on the conceptualization of the mindset construct. Implications of these results with regards to the conceptualization of mindset are discussed.

Despite the growing recognition and adoption of social commerce, its practice is often driven by fast-paced technological evolutions, hype, and ad-hoc business cases. In parallel, social commerce has been the target of limited scientific inquiries, and it remains ill conceived, which constitutes an obstacle to theory development and cumulative research. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a focus on social commerce networks (SCNs). SCNs refer to the digital network ties created and leveraged by consumers and business entities as they connect and interact among and between each other. Based on this definition, the paper develops a typology of key SCN structures, and it proposes a framework depicting the value that consumers and businesses can gain from creating and exploiting them. We explain how the proposed SCN concept, typology, and framework can guide future conversations on the topic of social commerce, and how they can provide researchers and practitioners with a better understanding of social commerce and its considerable value potential.

Dane;Abstract This study examines cyber aggression and cyber victimization from an evolutionary perspective, extending the literature by: (1) employing Latent Class Analysis to identify cyber aggression-victimization status groups using proactive and reactive cyber aggression, and cyber victimization, as indicators; and (2) examining whether cyber aggression-victimization status groups experience social advantages and disadvantages similar to those in traditional aggression research. In this study, a three-class model best described adolescents’ cyber aggression and victimization; in the sample of 400 adolescents ages 12–18, 79.4% were uninvolved, 13.1% were mixed cyber aggressor-victims (moderate proactive and reactive cyber aggression, and cyber victimization), and 7.4% were highly reactive cyber aggressor-victims (moderate proactive cyber aggression and cyber victimization, but high reactive cyber aggression). These groups contrast with those found in empirical traditional aggression research as pure cyber aggressors and cyber victims were not identified. Consistent with evolutionary theory and aggression research that suggest it has adaptive functions, mixed cyber aggressor-victims reported more social dominance and dating partners, and highly reactive cyber aggressor-victims reported more sexual partners, when compared to uninvolved peers. However, highly reactive cyber aggressor-victims also reported more friendship anxiety and less implicit social power than the mixed and uninvolved group, consistent with traditional research suggesting that reactive aggression is more strongly linked to social disadvantages and less strongly linked to social advantages, than is proactive aggression. Although cyber aggression is a relatively new form of aggression, an evolutionary perspective can illuminate why it continues to be a social problem despite intervention efforts.

Despite the ease with which users can send potentially hurtful messages, it is unclear how the impact of these messages compares to in-person interactions. The current study is the first to directly compare the emotional impact of in-person criticism to text message criticism using a randomized controlled design. Emerging adults (n = 172) completed a lab-based stressor and were then randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) in-person criticism, 2) criticism via text message, or 3) no feedback (control). Criticism was provided by a similar-aged female confederate. Both criticism groups reported significantly lower positive affect and higher negative affect and stress, compared to the control group, with no meaningful difference between the two forms of criticism. Those low on trait mindfulness reported significantly more hurt feelings when criticized through text (versus in-person), providing preliminary evidence that mindfulness could serve a protective role when receiving criticism via mobile messaging. Findings are also important in light of emerging evidence that efforts to make amends through digital communication may be less effective than in-person communication at fostering positive affect and bonding.

Results indicated that interviews conducted online produced fewer words and took longer to complete, and involved more rapport-building, however, there were no mean differences in the level of self-disclosure and the formality of the interviews, nor in the number and kind of themes that emerged or in the depth to which the themes were discussed. The findings suggest that despite taking longer and producing fewer words, data quality is unaffected by the mode of data collection (online versus face-to-face).

Henke;Abstract As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to grow in proficiency, the potential for AI to be used as team members rather than tools is becoming closer to realization. This advancement is driving new research investigations into the applicability of human-human teamwork knowledge to the context of human-autonomy teaming. In the current study, we apply qualitative methods to explore how the perceived composition of a team (how many humans and how many agents on the team) affects sentiments toward teammates, team processes, cognitive states, and the emergence of a system of team cognition. A total of 46 teams completed a teamwork simulation task and were interviewed afterwards regarding their teamwork experience. All of the teams were comprised of only humans; however, two conditions were led to believe that their teammate(s) were autonomous agents. Interviews were analyzed using grounded theory and the Gioia methodology, which revealed thematic differences between the team compositions. In light of our results, we offer a new model that describes how early-stage action teams achieve effective team processes and emergent cognitive states.

The current study examines the sharing and disclosure of bullying experiences through the use of Twitter data by including keywords that capture both face-to-face and cyberbullying experiences. Using human coded tweets and supervised machine learning, the study considers the role of the author in bullying-related tweets, identifies different types of bullying, analyzes why someone would share a bullying episode on Twitter, and examines the temporal patterns of bullying-related tweets. The study analyzed 847,548 tweets collected between August 7, 2019, and March 31, 2020. The results revealed that most of the tweets were shared from the perspective of the victim, included both general and online bullying, and the most common reason for posting was to report or to self-disclose. Bullying-related tweets were significantly longer than the average tweet and high profile incidents prompted an increase in posts. The results suggest that while Twitter may be a venue for bullying, it is also a space where users can find cathartic discussion and support. This study highlights ways that researchers, educators, and policymakers can utilize Twitter as a medium for positive change and harness machine learning to inform policy and anti-bullying initiatives.

High rates of suicide, depression, and substance abuse are prevalent among Indigenous people, especially youth. Research has reported that many Indigenous communities have adopted and are keen to adopt digital technologies, which have shown potential to provide e-mental health (eMH) resources for Indigenous people. By conducting a systematic literature review, this article examines the impact of Indigenous people's interactions with digital media on their mental health and wellbeing. The twenty-seven empirical studies included in this review were conducted with Indigenous participants primarily across four countries. We analyzed the studies' research objectives and respective instruments to measure the impact of an array of digital technologies adopted by Indigenous people for their mental health needs or used in Indigenous-specific eMH programs. This paper reports on themes found in the peer-reviewed literature, including Indigenous people and other stakeholders' perspectives on eMH and the viability of its implementation. The findings suggest that digital technologies can be effective in aiding the provision and improvement of Indigenous mental health services, particularly when applying decolonizing, culturally appropriate approaches. This review provides insights for researchers, health professionals, and educators to develop and implement innovative eMH resources for Indigenous communities.

This study examines the relationships between mindset, critical feedback-seeking, and learning. Undergraduate students (n = 155) at a University in Western Canada completed a mindset pre-test, played an online assessment game in which they designed three posters, and completed a post-test measuring their learning of graphic design principles. For each poster, the game tracked students’ choices to seek confirmatory or critical feedback and to revise their posters, as well as their poster performance. Findings show that the more the students seek critical feedback, the more they revise their posters and the better they perform across the game. Theoretical implications resulting from mediation analyses indicate that revision fully explains the link between critical feedback-seeking and performance. Moreover, moderation analyses of mindset revealed differential results on the relationship between critical feedback-seeking and learning, depending on the conceptualization of the mindset construct. Implications of these results with regards to the conceptualization of mindset are discussed.

Despite the growing recognition and adoption of social commerce, its practice is often driven by fast-paced technological evolutions, hype, and ad-hoc business cases. In parallel, social commerce has been the target of limited scientific inquiries, and it remains ill conceived, which constitutes an obstacle to theory development and cumulative research. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a focus on social commerce networks (SCNs). SCNs refer to the digital network ties created and leveraged by consumers and business entities as they connect and interact among and between each other. Based on this definition, the paper develops a typology of key SCN structures, and it proposes a framework depicting the value that consumers and businesses can gain from creating and exploiting them. We explain how the proposed SCN concept, typology, and framework can guide future conversations on the topic of social commerce, and how they can provide researchers and practitioners with a better understanding of social commerce and its considerable value potential.

Dane;Abstract This study examines cyber aggression and cyber victimization from an evolutionary perspective, extending the literature by: (1) employing Latent Class Analysis to identify cyber aggression-victimization status groups using proactive and reactive cyber aggression, and cyber victimization, as indicators; and (2) examining whether cyber aggression-victimization status groups experience social advantages and disadvantages similar to those in traditional aggression research. In this study, a three-class model best described adolescents’ cyber aggression and victimization; in the sample of 400 adolescents ages 12–18, 79.4% were uninvolved, 13.1% were mixed cyber aggressor-victims (moderate proactive and reactive cyber aggression, and cyber victimization), and 7.4% were highly reactive cyber aggressor-victims (moderate proactive cyber aggression and cyber victimization, but high reactive cyber aggression). These groups contrast with those found in empirical traditional aggression research as pure cyber aggressors and cyber victims were not identified. Consistent with evolutionary theory and aggression research that suggest it has adaptive functions, mixed cyber aggressor-victims reported more social dominance and dating partners, and highly reactive cyber aggressor-victims reported more sexual partners, when compared to uninvolved peers. However, highly reactive cyber aggressor-victims also reported more friendship anxiety and less implicit social power than the mixed and uninvolved group, consistent with traditional research suggesting that reactive aggression is more strongly linked to social disadvantages and less strongly linked to social advantages, than is proactive aggression. Although cyber aggression is a relatively new form of aggression, an evolutionary perspective can illuminate why it continues to be a social problem despite intervention efforts.

Despite the ease with which users can send potentially hurtful messages, it is unclear how the impact of these messages compares to in-person interactions. The current study is the first to directly compare the emotional impact of in-person criticism to text message criticism using a randomized controlled design. Emerging adults (n = 172) completed a lab-based stressor and were then randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) in-person criticism, 2) criticism via text message, or 3) no feedback (control). Criticism was provided by a similar-aged female confederate. Both criticism groups reported significantly lower positive affect and higher negative affect and stress, compared to the control group, with no meaningful difference between the two forms of criticism. Those low on trait mindfulness reported significantly more hurt feelings when criticized through text (versus in-person), providing preliminary evidence that mindfulness could serve a protective role when receiving criticism via mobile messaging. Findings are also important in light of emerging evidence that efforts to make amends through digital communication may be less effective than in-person communication at fostering positive affect and bonding.
