Carvalho;Abstract In this research, we examined the effect of the country of origin (COO) image of an ingredient brand on consumers' evaluation of a host brand. Using airlines as host products and aircraft as ingredients, two experiments were conducted in Brazil and Canada respectively, to assess the COO effect of an ingredient brand on the host brand. Results show that a local host brand from a country with a favorable COO image (Canada) is unaffected by an ingredient brand from a country with an unfavorable COO image (Brazil), whereas a local host brand from a country with an unfavorable COO image is benefited by an ingredient brand from a country with a favorable COO image. This effect is moderated by a home country bias of consumers. Evaluation of the local host brand was unaffected by the COO image of the ingredient brand among those with a high bias toward local brands.

Findings from analyses of SME loan defaults between 2001 and 2015 suggest that franchisees, young and old, were just as likely to default than non-franchisee counterparts. The likelihood of loan default is higher for franchisees than for non-franchisees for those with high debt burdens. While default rates vary by sector, these findings are robust to sector-specific estimations and alternative time horizons of default. Findings suggest that the benefits of the franchising model, such as new firms acquiring the franchisors’ brand name, do not necessarily lead to lower default rates for franchisees. Overall, this study finds evidence questioning the proposition that franchising is a relatively less risky form of business organization for prospective entrepreneurs.

Morgan; Pengcheng Zhu;Abstract Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are strategically important investments that can drive corporate growth and development. However, they offer uncertain payoffs over the long term and could cost top executives their jobs when results are disappointing. As a result, risk-averse top executives can be reluctant to strategically decide to support even promising M&As. We integrate insights from upper echelon and managerial risk-aversion perspectives to determine whether and when antitakeover provisions can foster firms’ acquisition frequency. Drawing on a sample of 8438 M&As by 1301 public companies in the United States, we report evidence that these provisions positively affect firms’ acquisition frequency. We also find that the positive impact of these provisions on firms’ acquisition frequency is weaker when chief executive officers own a larger proportion of their firms’ equity and when firms operate in industries with higher competition. We discuss the theoretical and practical significance of our findings.

Hung;Abstract Faced with growing pressures to become more environmentally sustainable, many companies are exploring innovative ways to incorporate “green” practices into their business processes. We focus on employees and their pro-environmental behaviours in the workplace. Drawing on gamification and persuasive design principles, we utilized five design cycles to develop and test a system that tracks employees' electricity usage on their computer-related equipment, engages them through a mobile application using a garden metaphor, and encourages them to reduce their energy consumption. The results of the design cycles built on each other, demonstrating that the system decreases employees' electricity consumption and increases their motivation to continue engaging in pro-environmental behaviours. Possible extensions to the system were also explored. Reflecting on our experiences, seven guidelines emerged related to gamification design and the wider field of design science research. Limitations and future research directions for gamification and environmental sustainability research are discussed.

Paul Scarbrough;Jan Alpenberg; D. Paul Scarbrough;Abstract This paper reports on the nature of dispersed and integrative practices (Schatzki, 1996) in collaborative work. Working in collaboration is becoming more common across organizations and a research topic across domains. We use the situation of changes in the use of collaboration to investigate the dispersed-integrative concept using in-depth interviews and observations in organizations employing the same high collaboration work method (Lean Production, LP). We show that it was the introduction of collaborative work that was followed by the binding of the dispersed practice with the integrative practice to form a new integrative practice containing the social component. This result has implications for research and for practice. In general, it supports the importance of the practice theory lens in study of organizations as a generator of novel insight. It also moves practice theory forward by developing theory about changes in dispersed and integrative practices and their relation to each other.

Roland Thomas; Marzena Cedzynski;Abstract This study's purpose is to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis on the diversity and nature of country image (CI) definitions in academic research. We used both qualitative content analysis and quantitative social network analysis to systematically analyse CI definitions. The study identified the key concepts that have been central to defining CI and the processes of CI formation. We also examined how the definitions have evolved over four decades. We found an increasing diversity in the academic definitions of CI. We identified several trends in the academic definitions to suggest that the conceptualization of CI has become broader and is no longer confined to the context of consumption. We also compared definitions from academia to those from the general population. With a few exceptions, academia and the general population did not agree on the popular concepts and mechanisms in CI definition.

Morgan; Pengcheng Zhu;Abstract Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are strategically important investments that can drive corporate growth and development. However, they offer uncertain payoffs over the long term and could cost top executives their jobs when results are disappointing. As a result, risk-averse top executives can be reluctant to strategically decide to support even promising M&As. We integrate insights from upper echelon and managerial risk-aversion perspectives to determine whether and when antitakeover provisions can foster firms’ acquisition frequency. Drawing on a sample of 8438 M&As by 1301 public companies in the United States, we report evidence that these provisions positively affect firms’ acquisition frequency. We also find that the positive impact of these provisions on firms’ acquisition frequency is weaker when chief executive officers own a larger proportion of their firms’ equity and when firms operate in industries with higher competition. We discuss the theoretical and practical significance of our findings.

Hung;Abstract Faced with growing pressures to become more environmentally sustainable, many companies are exploring innovative ways to incorporate “green” practices into their business processes. We focus on employees and their pro-environmental behaviours in the workplace. Drawing on gamification and persuasive design principles, we utilized five design cycles to develop and test a system that tracks employees' electricity usage on their computer-related equipment, engages them through a mobile application using a garden metaphor, and encourages them to reduce their energy consumption. The results of the design cycles built on each other, demonstrating that the system decreases employees' electricity consumption and increases their motivation to continue engaging in pro-environmental behaviours. Possible extensions to the system were also explored. Reflecting on our experiences, seven guidelines emerged related to gamification design and the wider field of design science research. Limitations and future research directions for gamification and environmental sustainability research are discussed.

Paul Scarbrough;Jan Alpenberg; D. Paul Scarbrough;Abstract This paper reports on the nature of dispersed and integrative practices (Schatzki, 1996) in collaborative work. Working in collaboration is becoming more common across organizations and a research topic across domains. We use the situation of changes in the use of collaboration to investigate the dispersed-integrative concept using in-depth interviews and observations in organizations employing the same high collaboration work method (Lean Production, LP). We show that it was the introduction of collaborative work that was followed by the binding of the dispersed practice with the integrative practice to form a new integrative practice containing the social component. This result has implications for research and for practice. In general, it supports the importance of the practice theory lens in study of organizations as a generator of novel insight. It also moves practice theory forward by developing theory about changes in dispersed and integrative practices and their relation to each other.

Roland Thomas; Marzena Cedzynski;Abstract This study's purpose is to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis on the diversity and nature of country image (CI) definitions in academic research. We used both qualitative content analysis and quantitative social network analysis to systematically analyse CI definitions. The study identified the key concepts that have been central to defining CI and the processes of CI formation. We also examined how the definitions have evolved over four decades. We found an increasing diversity in the academic definitions of CI. We identified several trends in the academic definitions to suggest that the conceptualization of CI has become broader and is no longer confined to the context of consumption. We also compared definitions from academia to those from the general population. With a few exceptions, academia and the general population did not agree on the popular concepts and mechanisms in CI definition.
