ABSTRACT In Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), reports on disease frequency are very limited. This study aimed to report frequencies of the main cause of admission among inpatients of a tertiary general hospital (Mittaphab Hospital) in Vientiane. Subjects were inpatients who were admitted from January 3 to February 2 in 2017. The dataset were made as a pilot run to establish hospital statistics. The data on sex, age, address (province), dates of admission and discharge, and main diagnosis were collected from paper-based medical charts. International Classification of Diseases 10 was applied for classifying the main diagnosis. During the 1-month period, 1,201 inpatients (637 males and 564 females) were admitted, including 171 (14.2%) aged <20 years and 254 (21.1%) aged ≥60 years. About 20% patients were from outside of Vientiane. Among them, 67.5% (62.5% in males and 73.8% in females) were admitted within 7 days. The main causes with more than 10% in males were injury and poisoning S00-T98 (49.8%), while those in females were injury and poisoning S00-T98 (25.2%), pregnancy and childbirth O00-O99 (19.0%), and diseases of genitourinary system N00-N99 (13.7%). Injury and poisoning S00-T98 among inpatients aged <20 years was 81.8% in males and 59.0% in females. Among those aged 20–59 years, it was 49.9% and 22.4%, and among those aged ≥60 years it was 22.3% and 16.9%, respectively. This is the first report on the frequencies of main diseases among inpatients in Lao PDR. Injury was the first main cause of admission at the tertiary hospital.

ABSTRACT For appropriate treatments of infectious diseases, rapid identification of the pathogens is crucial. Here, we developed a rapid and label-free method for identifying common bacterial pathogens as individual bacteria by using three-dimensional quantitative phase imaging and deep learning. We achieved 95% accuracy in classifying 19 bacterial species by exploiting the rich information in three-dimensional refractive index tomograms with a convolutional neural network classifier. Extensive analysis of the features extracted by the trained classifier was carried out, which supported that our classifier is capable of learning species-dependent characteristics. We also confirmed that utilizing three-dimensional refractive index tomograms was crucial for identification ability compared to two-dimensional imaging. This method, which does not require time-consuming culture, shows high feasibility for diagnosing patients with infectious diseases who would benefit from immediate and adequate antibiotic treatment.

Observables sensitive to the anomalous production of events containing hadronic jets and missing momentum in the plane transverse to the proton beams at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The observables are defined as a ratio of cross sections, for events containing jets and large missing transverse momentum to events containing jets and a pair of charged leptons from the decay of a \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$Z/\gamma ^*$$\end{document}Z/γ∗ boson. This definition minimises experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties in the measurements. This ratio is measured differentially with respect to a number of kinematic properties of the hadronic system in two phase-space regions; one inclusive single-jet region and one region sensitive to vector-boson-fusion topologies. The data are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions and used to constrain a variety of theoretical models for dark-matter production, including simplified models, effective field theory models, and invisible decays of the Higgs boson. With the increase in energy of the Large Hadron Collider to a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV for Run 2, events with dense environments, such as in the cores of high-energy jets, became a focus for new physics searches as well as measurements of the Standard Model. These environments are characterized by charged-particle separations of the order of the tracking detectors sensor granularity. Basic track quantities are compared between 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS experiment and simulation of proton-proton collisions producing high-transverse-momentum jets at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The impact of charged-particle separations and multiplicities on the track reconstruction performance is discussed. The efficiency in the cores of jets with transverse momenta between 200 GeV and 1600 GeV is quantified using a novel, data-driven, method. The method uses the energy loss, dE/dx, to identify pixel clusters originating from two charged particles. Of the charged particles creating these clusters, the measured fraction that fail to be reconstructed is $0.061 \pm 0.006 \textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.014 \textrm{(syst.)}$ and $0.093 \pm 0.017 \textrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.021 \textrm{(syst.)}$ for jet transverse momenta of 200-400 GeV and 1400-1600 GeV, respectively. Abstract To evaluate the visual outcomes of cataract surgery in patients with uveitis, and to determine risk factors for the recurrence of uveitis and postoperative complications. Eighty patients with uveitis who underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation were included in this retrospective study. We analyzed the following data: patient characteristics, medications used, visual acuity, and complications of cataract surgery. The mean ± standard deviation time from cataract surgery to the last visit was 20.8 ± 10.4 months. Best-corrected visual acuity improved significantly after surgery (P < .001). The visual outcome was worse in patients with Behçet disease than in patients with other etiologies of uveitis. Gender (P = .018) and IOL type (P = .020) were significantly associated with recurrent uveitis after surgery. The incidence of recurrent inflammation was not significantly different between patients who did or did not receive systemic therapy (P = .43). Perioperative systemic therapies (P = .011) and recurrent uveitis within 3 months of surgery (P = .043) were associated with posterior capsular opacification. Perioperative systemic therapies (P = .026) and recurrent uveitis after surgery (P = .006) were also significantly associated with cystoid macular edema. Patients with uveitis could benefit from cataract surgery. Patients with Behçet disease had worse postoperative prognosis than patients with other etiologies of uveitis. A heparin-surface-modified IOL may reduce the incidence of recurrent inflammation.

Measurements of distributions of charged particles produced in proton–proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 151 \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\upmu\text{b}^{-1}$$\end{document}μb-1. The particles are required to have a transverse momentum greater than 100 MeV and an absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.5. The charged-particle multiplicity, its dependence on transverse momentum and pseudorapidity and the dependence of the mean transverse momentum on multiplicity are measured in events containing at least two charged particles satisfying the above kinematic criteria. The results are corrected for detector effects and compared to the predictions from several Monte Carlo event generators.

The measurements use 3.2 fb\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$^{-1}$$\end{document}-1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\text {TeV}$$\end{document}TeV and are fully corrected for detector effects, meaning that the data can be used to constrain new-physics models beyond those shown in this paper.

    Authors: Aaboud, M.; Aad, G.; Abbott, B.; Abdallah, J.; +196 Authors
