Background: The implementation of mandatory synoptic templates in the final diagnosis section of pathology reports has been associated with increased uniformity and clarity though the content and format of other pathology report sections have yet to be examined. This study appears to be the first of its kind to examine the importance of gross and microscopic descriptions for pathologists and clinicians. Methods: Survey invitations were forwarded to both pathologists and clinicians on their use and their perceived value of the gross and microscopic description sections. A retrospective review of pathology reports of the specimens most commonly submitted to pathology was then performed to determine the elements currently included in/ omitted from microscopic descriptions. Results: Overall, the majority of pathologists indicated they at least usually read the gross descriptions of biopsies (73.59%) and excisional specimens (91.18%) but rarely felt that microscopic descriptions should be included for biopsies (81.25%) nor excisional specimens (78.13%). Pathologists also indicated they believed gross and microscopic descriptions were rarely read (72.73% and 57.58% respectively), understood (54.55% and 42.42% respectively), or utilized by clinicians. However, the majority of clinicians indicated that they always read pathology reports (94.94%) and at least usually read and understood the gross (79.66% and 85.80% respectively) and microscopic descriptions (91.23% and 87.06% respectively) and found these sections valuable. The pathology report review revealed that microscopic descriptions were included most frequently for renal (100%) and hepatic (45%) biopsies and dermatological excisions (53.85%) and consisted of histological descriptions and ancillary studies of the respective tissues. Other specimen types including pulmonary, and breast biopsies along with gynecological excisions included this information in the comments section. Conclusion: In summary, pathologists are advised to be cognizant that clinicians read and find value in the gross and microscopic description sections. Furthermore, there appears to be a discordance between where elements are included in pathology reports depending on specimen type. For increased consistency and clarity, it is recommended that elements be included in designated sections across all specimen types.

For over a century the complicated nature of cosmic rays has provided mankind with many unanswered questions. Due to the non linear nature of turbulent magnetic fields and their interaction with charged particles there has been a mathematical struggle in the scientific community to find answers to some of these questions. In this thesis, the fundamental equation of cosmic ray propagation (the Fokker-Planck equation) is examined alongside its properties. The solution to this equation is found numerically, as well as approximated analytically, and the most popular models for the undetermined, Fokker-Planck scattering coefficient, are examined. As well, the perpendicular diffusion coefficients that drive the nature of cosmic ray propagation are examined by using the most contemporary theoretical model, time dependent UNLT theory. This theory demands assumptions for both the magnetic correlation tensor and the particle distribution function, therefore the most commonly made assumptions for each are explored.

When a crime is committed and reported, detectives have the responsibility of solving the crime by arresting one or more suspects. Scientific research shows that forensic traces are not always useful in crime-solving. The utility of forensics is therefore questioned in investigations. Through semi-directed interviews with detectives from two different police forces in Quebec, this research explores the perceived usefulness and utility of the trace in solving three different types of crimes: homicides, sexual assaults and robberies. The results show that the trace’s utility primarily depends on the case investigated and the type of crime. In homicide cases, the trace is often at the center of investigations and is perceived as very useful in crime-solving. In cases of sexual assault, a conviction can take place without any physical trace used or/and presented as evidence. The simple presence of forensic evidence can be useful in court. In the case of robberies, its usefulness is demonstrated when it helps in linking a series of crimes. By comparing the perception of investigators with the results found in forensic science research, this research suggests what improvements can be made in the police community to improve the use of forensics in crimesolving. Advance care planning (ACP) communication falls under nurses’ scope of practice, yet we have limited understanding of the experiences of nurses working in long-term care (LTC) settings with these future-oriented or end-of-life discussions. The purpose of this study was to explore nurses' perceptions of ACP communication with residents/patients and families in LTC settings. The qualitative method of interpretive description was used to answer three research questions: “What are LTC nurses' ACP experiences”; “What are nurses’ perceptions of their ACP roles”; and, “What barriers and facilitators to ACP communication exist in their practice?” A convenience sample of fifteen registered nurses and licensed practical nurses working in LTC settings in Manitoba, Canada volunteered for the study. Individual one-on-one telephone interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. Using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis process two themes were identified: A Sense of an Ethical Obligation to Engage in ACP Communication; and Sensibility of the Determinants of ACP Communication. Nurses described how their ethical obligation to engage in ACP communication was influenced by their definitions of ACP, the approaches to ACP in their workplaces, and their personal and professional ACP experiences. Nurses identified roles and actions that flow from this ethical obligation and factors, both personal and structural, that hinder and catalyze ACP communication in LTC. This study adds to the scholarly literature related to LTC nurses’ ACP communication. The study findings point to the need for improvements in ACP policies, procedures, practice, and education, and research for nurses in a variety of settings. Keywords: advance care planning, nurses, long-term care, interpretive description

Publisher: IEEE XploreCountry: CanadaWithin the field of electromyography-based (EMG) gesture recognition, disparities exist between the off line accuracy reported in the literature and the real-time usability of a classifier. This gap mainly stems from two factors: 1) The absence of a controller, making the data collected dissimilar to actual control. 2) The difficulty of including the four main dynamic factors (gesture intensity, limb position, electrode shift, and transient changes in the signal), as including their permutations drastically increases the amount of data to be recorded. Contrarily, online datasets are limited to the exact EMG-based controller used to record them, necessitating the recording of a new dataset for each control method or variant to be tested. Consequently, this paper proposes a new type of dataset to serve as an intermediate between off line and online datasets, by recording the data using a real-time experimental protocol. The protocol, performed in virtual reality, includes the four main dynamic factors and uses an EMG-independent controller to guide movements. This EMG-independent feedback ensures that the user is in-the-loop during recording, while enabling the resulting dynamic dataset to be used as an EMG-based benchmark. The dataset is comprised of 20 able-bodied participants completing three to four sessions over a period of 14 to 21 days. The ability of the dynamic dataset to serve as a benchmark is leveraged to evaluate the impact of different-recalibration techniques for long-term (across-day) gesture recognition, including a novel algorithm, named TADANN. TADANN consistently and significantly (p <; 0.05) outperforms using fine-tuning as the recalibration technique.

Country: CanadaThe Optical Trapping experiment uses the momentum of photons from a laser beam in order to apply a trapping force onto 4.5 µm diameter polystyrene microspheres. When trapped in this way, the spheres behave much like they would in a physical spring. This allows us to search for a spring constant k for the trap as well as it’s maximum force output. While the experiment was unable to trap any spheres, we were able to observe the Brownian motion of the spheres due to temperature fluctuations and determined the diffusive coefficient of the spheres in solution as being D = 0:0031(1) µm2/s:

The purpose of this study was to comprehensively examine the ways in which the elementary health and physical education (HPE) teachers understand responsiveness in their teaching practices and how they engage in responsive pedagogy. For this study, the generic qualitative research methodology was used, and seven participants who have at least three years of teaching experiences in elementary HPE contexts in Manitoba were recruited through a maximum variation strategy. One-on-one semi-structured interviews, follow-up conversational interviews, field notes, and self-reflective journals were used as data. The data was analyzed thematically to identify the particular themes that construct the HPE teachers’ understandings of responsiveness and their engagement in responsive teaching practices in their day-to-day HPE teaching contexts. The quality of the research findings was ensured through six quality criteria (i.e., reflexivity, credibility, resonance, significant contribution, ethics, and coherence). As the result of the study, three main themes that describe a responsive teacher in HPE were identified: 1) Being a Passionate Learning Facilitator; 2) Being an Empowering Educator; and 3) Being a Lifelong Learner. Each theme was supported by several subthemes that describe the participants’ perspectives and experiences on teacher’s responsiveness in HPE contexts. This research study has contributed to the provision of empirical knowledge for teachers regarding practical ways to engage in responsive teaching practices in multicultural classroom settings that encompass students’ diverse backgrounds and levels of abilities. In addition, the research findings drawn from the participants’ own perspectives and experiences provided the practical information that would help teachers appropriately teach and respond to students with diverse educational needs. This information has also contributed to filling a gap between book-knowledge and real-life practices of teaching with diverse student populations in multicultural HPE contexts. In doing so, the results of this study provided HPE teachers not only with opportunities to reflect on their teaching practices, but also with resources containing in-depth knowledge helpful for improving their teaching in a responsive manner. Further research should consider a more diverse context in various regions and at different school levels (i.e., middle or high schools). In addition, following studies on teachers’ responsive teaching practices would need to be conducted from various perspectives, such as students, parents, pre-service teachers, or school administrators.
