This paper deals with the control logic of an undervoltage, closed-loop load shedding scheme aimed at protecting the Hydro-Quebec system against long-term voltage instability. This scheme relies on a set of "if-then" rules whose parameters are determined through combinatorial optimisation, relying on the system dynamic response over a set of scenarios. Preliminary results of the above optimisation technique are given, besides a brief description of the foreseen implementation.

Country: BelgiumThe power system networks in North America and Europe are the largest man-made interconnected systems in the world. Many power system applications rely on time consuming dynamic simulations of large-scale power systems in order to optimize the operation and ensure the reliability of the electricity network. Dynamic simulations of power systems involve the solution of a series of initial value, stiff, hybrid DAE systems over a time window. To achieve this, the time window is discretized and a new DAE system is formed and solved at each time step, with initial values taken from the previous time step solution. At each new time step, the DAE system to be solved can be different because of the discrete variables involved in the formulation (e.g. a differential equation can become algebraic and vice versa). A non-overlapping domain decomposition is proposed to speed up the solution of the DAE system using the Schur Complement Method. The special structure of the physical system helps define the domain partitioning scheme and eliminates the need for a partitioning algorithm. It allows the formulation and solution of the reduced system using sparse, direct solvers to obtain the interface variables. Afterward, the parallel evaluation of the internal subdomain variables is possible and efficient load balancing is achieved. Numerically, the method shows no convergence degradation when compared to the integrated method, which is traditionally used for solving power system DAEs. The aspects of decomposition, solution and optimization of the algorithm for the specific problem are discussed and results from the application of the DDM on realistic power system models are presented.

We investigate the power of voting among diverse, randomized software agents. With teams of computer Go agents in mind, we develop a novel theoretical model of two-stage noisy voting that builds on recent work in machine learning. This model allows us to reason about a collection of agents with different biases (determined by the first-stage noise models), which, furthermore, apply randomized algorithms to evaluate alternatives and produce votes (captured by the second-stage noise models). We analytically demonstrate that a uniform team, consisting of multiple instances of any single agent, must make a significant number of mistakes, whereas a diverse team converges to perfection as the number of agents grows. Our experiments, which pit teams of computer Go agents against strong agents, provide evidence for the effectiveness of voting when agents are diverse.

Country: BelgiumProject: NSERCDurable adhesion of repair material on concrete substrate requires compatibility between the materials to be bonded. There are four main compatibility components to be addressed in any concrete repair scenario: dimensional, permeability, chemical and electrochemical compatibility. Among those, dimensional compatibility is often prevalent: while a cement-base repair material inevitably undergoes shrinkage, the substrate opposes to its free movement, a situation that can lead to cracking and, subsequently, promote debonding. Besides, an essential requirement for bond development is the creation of the interface itself: the intimate contact between the repair system and concrete substrate is required in order to maximize adhesion. Adequate compaction of the new layer is consequently one of the main parameters that will govern the quality of the bond: sufficient vibration or specific rheological properties for the repair material are needed. Self-Compacting Repair Mortar (SCRM) can be advantageously used in many repair situations. Limestone fillers seem to offer interesting advantages as addition to these repair materials as they increase the workability of the final product. Several materials have been tested and characterised by means of a physical, chemical and mechanical characterization test program: specific attention has been given to water demand and superplasticizer efficiency.

Country: BelgiumEnvironmental factors are known to have a major effect on behavioral patterns of organisms. Among these factors, temperature particularly affects ectotherms. However, although many studies focused on acoustic communication, the effect of environmental temperature on visual courtship displays and sexual performance has been little explored. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of temperature on the sexual behaviour of the Alpine newt Triturus alpestris in controlled laboratory conditions. Temperature had a major effect on the two sexes: at low temperatures, the frequencies of several displays, including sperm deposition, is lowered. This variation is in fact caused by the female responsiveness, which is temperature-dependent. However, some other behaviours, such as the fanning movement of the male’s tail (i.e., the main courtship display) are directly dependent on temperature: at lower temperatures, the tail beats at a lower rate but for a longer time. The similar reproductive success at the two temperatures indicates that breeding in cold water is not necessarily costly. It allows males and females to mate early in the season. This is particularly adaptive because, in many habitats, the reproductive period is shortened by drying or freezing conditions which may impair survival of branchiate offspring.

Carbon monoxide total column amounts in the atmosphere have been measured in the High Northern Hemisphere (30degrees - 90degrees N, HNH) between January 2002 and December 2003 using infrared spectrometers of high and moderate resolution and the Sun as a light source. They were compared to ground-level CO mixing ratios and to total column amounts measured from space by the Terra/MOPITT instrument. All these data reveal increased CO abundances in 2002 - 2003 in comparison to the unperturbed 2000 - 2001 period. Maximum anomalies were observed in September 2002 and August 2003. Using a simple two-box model, the corresponding annual CO emission anomalies (referenced to 2000 - 2001 period) have been found equal to 95 Tg in 2002 and 130 Tg in 2003, thus close to those for 1996 and 1998. A good correlation with hot spots detected by a satellite radiometer allows one to assume strong boreal forest fires, occurred mainly in Russia, as a source of the increased CO burdens.

The Optical Spectrograph and Infra-Red Imager System (OSIRIS) and the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) have been taking measurements from space since 2001 and 2003, respectively. This paper presents intercomparisons between ozone and NO2 measured by the ACE and OSIRIS satellite instruments and by ground-based instruments at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL), which is located at Eureka, Canada (80° N, 86° W) and is operated by the Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC). The ground-based instruments included in this study are four zenith-sky differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) instruments, one Bruker Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and four Brewer spectrophotometers. Ozone total columns measured by the DOAS instruments were retrieved using new Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) guidelines and agree to within 3.2%. The DOAS ozone columns agree with the Brewer spectrophotometers with mean relative differences that are smaller than 1.5%. This suggests that for these instruments the new NDACC data guidelines were successful in producing a homogenous and accurate ozone dataset at 80° N. Satellite 14–52 km ozone and 17–40 km NO2 partial columns within 500 km of PEARL were calculated for ACE-FTS Version 2.2 (v2.2) plus updates, ACE-FTS v3.0, ACE-MAESTRO (Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation) v1.2 and OSIRIS SaskMART v5.0x ozone and Optimal Estimation v3.0 NO2 data products. The new ACE-FTS v3.0 and the validated ACE-FTS v2.2 partial columns are nearly identical, with mean relative differences of 0.0 ± 0.2% and −0.2 ± 0.1% for v2.2 minus v3.0 ozone and NO2, respectively. Ozone columns were constructed from 14–52 km satellite and 0–14 km ozonesonde partial columns and compared with the ground-based total column measurements. The satellite-plus-sonde measurements agree with the ground-based ozone total columns with mean relative differences of 0.1–7.3%. For NO2, partial columns from 17 km upward were scaled to noon using a photochemical model. Mean relative differences between OSIRIS, ACE-FTS and ground-based NO2 measurements do not exceed 20%. ACE-MAESTRO measures more NO2 than the other instruments, with mean relative differences of 25–52%. Seasonal variation in the differences between NO2 partial columns is observed, suggesting that there are systematic errors in the measurements and/or the photochemical model corrections. For ozone spring-time measurements, additional coincidence criteria based on stratospheric temperature and the location of the polar vortex were found to improve agreement between some of the instruments. For ACE-FTS v2.2 minus Bruker FTIR, the 2007–2009 spring-time mean relative difference improved from −5.0 ± 0.4% to −3.1 ± 0.8% with the dynamical selection criteria. This was the largest improvement, likely because both instruments measure direct sunlight and therefore have well-characterized lines-of-sight compared with scattered sunlight measurements. For NO2, the addition of a ±1° latitude coincidence criterion improved spring-time intercomparison results, likely due to the sharp latitudinal gradient of NO2 during polar sunrise. The differences between satellite and ground-based measurements do not show any obvious trends over the missions, indicating that both the ACE and OSIRIS instruments continue to perform well.

The Optical Spectrograph and Infra-Red Imager System (OSIRIS) and the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) have been taking measurements from space since 2001 and 2003, respectively. This paper presents intercomparisons between ozone and NO2 measured by the ACE and OSIRIS satellite instruments and by ground-based instruments at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL), which is located at Eureka, Canada (80° N, 86° W) and is operated by the Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC). The ground-based instruments included in this study are four zenith-sky differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) instruments, one Bruker Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and four Brewer spectrophotometers. Ozone total columns measured by the DOAS instruments were retrieved using new Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) guidelines and agree to within 3.2%. The DOAS ozone columns agree with the Brewer spectrophotometers with mean relative differences that are smaller than 1.5%. This suggests that for these instruments the new NDACC data guidelines were successful in producing a homogenous and accurate ozone dataset at 80° N. Satellite 14–52 km ozone and 17–40 km NO2 partial columns within 500 km of PEARL were calculated for ACE-FTS Version 2.2 (v2.2) plus updates, ACE-FTS v3.0, ACE-MAESTRO (Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation) v1.2 and OSIRIS SaskMART v5.0x ozone and Optimal Estimation v3.0 NO2 data products. The new ACE-FTS v3.0 and the validated ACE-FTS v2.2 partial columns are nearly identical, with mean relative differences of 0.0 ± 0.2% and −0.2 ± 0.1% for v2.2 minus v3.0 ozone and NO2, respectively. Ozone columns were constructed from 14–52 km satellite and 0–14 km ozonesonde partial columns and compared with the ground-based total column measurements. The satellite-plus-sonde measurements agree with the ground-based ozone total columns with mean relative differences of 0.1–7.3%. For NO2, partial columns from 17 km upward were scaled to noon using a photochemical model. Mean relative differences between OSIRIS, ACE-FTS and ground-based NO2 measurements do not exceed 20%. ACE-MAESTRO measures more NO2 than the other instruments, with mean relative differences of 25–52%. Seasonal variation in the differences between NO2 partial columns is observed, suggesting that there are systematic errors in the measurements and/or the photochemical model corrections. For ozone spring-time measurements, additional coincidence criteria based on stratospheric temperature and the location of the polar vortex were found to improve agreement between some of the instruments. For ACE-FTS v2.2 minus Bruker FTIR, the 2007–2009 spring-time mean relative difference improved from −5.0 ± 0.4% to −3.1 ± 0.8% with the dynamical selection criteria. This was the largest improvement, likely because both instruments measure direct sunlight and therefore have well-characterized lines-of-sight compared with scattered sunlight measurements. For NO2, the addition of a ±1° latitude coincidence criterion improved spring-time intercomparison results, likely due to the sharp latitudinal gradient of NO2 during polar sunrise. The differences between satellite and ground-based measurements do not show any obvious trends over the missions, indicating that both the ACE and OSIRIS instruments continue to perform well.
