Previous experiments have shown that soil treated with H2 can enhance plant growth and have characterized this response to chemolithoautotrophic bacteria of three genera: Burkholderia, Flavobacterium and Variovorax. Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) were grown in a mixture containing either 5% H2-treated soil, 95% Promix (mass : mass), or 5% air-treated soil, 95% Promix (mass : mass). Plant biomass, root cytology and number of tillers were compared. There were no significant differences between treatments for spring wheat or between treatments for switchgrass. Spring wheat and switchgrass seeds were also germinated in elutions of H2-treated soil and elutions of air-treated soil to examine differences in germination rate and success. Again, there were no significant differences between treatments for spring wheat or between treatments for switchgrass. The most likely cause for the results was a lack of chemolithoautotrophic bacteria in the soil because the soil was stored for two years after the H2-treatment.
