    Implicit solvent models offer an attractive way to estimate the effects of a solvent environment on the properties of small or large solutes without the complications of explicit simulations. One common test of accuracy is to compute the free energy of transfer from gas to liquid for a variety of small molecules, since many of these values have been measured. Studies of the temperature dependence of these values (i.e. solvation enthalpies and entropies) can provide additional insights into the performance of implicit solvent models. Here, we show how to compute temperature derivatives of hydration free energies for the 3D-RISM integral equation approach. We have computed hydration free energies of 1123 small drug-like molecules (both neutral and charged). Temperature derivatives were also used to calculate hydration energies and entropies of 74 of these molecules (both neutral and charged) for which experimental data is available. While direct results have rather poor agreement with experiment, we have found that several previously proposed linear hydration free energy correction schemes give good agreement with experiment. These corrections also provide good agreement for hydration energies and entropies though simple extensions are required in some cases.

    In this paper, the improved localized method of approximated particular solutions (ILMAPS) using polyharmonic splines (PHS) together with a low-degree of polynomial basis is used to approximate solutions of various nonlinear elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). The method is completely meshfree, and it uses a radial basis function (RBF) that has no shape parameters. The discretization process is done through a simple collocation technique on a set of points in the local domain of influence. Resulted system of nonlinear algebraic equations is solved by the Picard method.The performance of the proposed method is tested on various nonlinear elliptical problems, including the Poisson-type problems in 2D and 3D with constant or variable coefficients on rectangular or irregular domains and the Poisson–Boltzmann equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions or mixed boundary conditions. The effect of domain shapes in 2D and 3D, types of boundary conditions, and degrees of PHS, and order of polynomial basis are examined. The performance of the method is compared with other bases such as multiquadrics (MQ) basis functions, and with results reported in the literature (method of particular solutions using polynomials). The numerical experiments suggest that ILMAPS with polyharmonic splines yields considerably superior accuracy than other RBFs as well as other approaches reported in the literature for solving nonlinear elliptic PDEs.

    This paper extends the notion of the $\la$-coalescent of Pitman (1999) to the spatial setting. The partition elements of the spatial $\Lambda$-coalescent migrate in a (finite) geographical space and may only coalesce if located at the same site of the space. We characterize the $\Lambda$-coalescents that come down from infinity, in an analogous way to Schweinsberg (2000). Surprisingly, all spatial coalescents that come down from infinity, also come down from infinity in a uniform way. This enables us to study space-time asymptotics of spatial $\Lambda$-coalescents on large tori in $d\ge 3$ dimensions. Our results generalize and strengthen those of Greven et al. (2005), who studied the spatial Kingman coalescent in this context. Comment: 29 pages

    Although solid-state image sensors are known to develop defects in the field, little information is available about the nature, quantity or development rate of these defects. We report on and algorithm and calibration tests, which confirmed the existence of significant quantities of in-field defects in 4 out of 5 high-end digital cameras. Standard hot pixels were identified in all 4 cameras. Stuck hot pixels, which have not been described previously, were identified in 2 cameras. Previously, hot-pixels were thought to have no impact at short exposure durations, but the large offset of stuck hot pixels will degrade almost any image and cannot be ignored. Fully-stuck and abnormal sensitivity defects were not found. Spatial investigation found no clustering. We tracked hot pixel growth over the lifetime of one camera, using only normal photographs. We show that defects develop continually over the lifetime of the sensor, starting within several months of first use, and do not heal over time. Our success in tracing the history of each defect confirms the feasibility of using automatic defect identification to analyze defect response and growth characteristics in a multitude of cameras already in the field, without performing additional experiments or requiring physical access to the cameras.

    Abstract Public pension boards fear inciting stakeholder outrage if they compensate internal investment managers with market-level salaries. We derive theoretical implications in an agency-portfolio-choice model motivated by inequality aversion. In a global sample, relaxing the effect of outrage on contracting leads to an average annual incremental value-added of $49 million generated through 11 bps in higher excess returns from risky assets, at the cost of $302,429 in additional compensation. Governance reforms that address outrage by reducing political appointees or requiring independent skills-based boards can increase the annual value-added. These findings are orthogonal to costly political distortions from underfunding and pay-to-play schemes.     A skeletonized body, wearing a black leather bondage mask, was found in a Revolutionary War smokehouse cave with two bullet holes in the back of the head. The body was skeletonized up to the maxillary area but the head region under the mask was well preserved and permitted a positive visual identification. There was evidence that the body had been eaten by small animals and subsequently burned. Investigations into this brutal murder revealed a tale of a bizarre sadomasochistic ritual that attained national prominence.

    For single-phase DC-AC power conversion, power decoupling is always required due to the existence of double-line-frequency ripple caused by the instantaneous unbalanced power between AC and DC side. The typical power decoupling method utilizes a large electrolytic capacitor and consequently increases the passive components requirement. The active power decoupling scheme introduces an additional low power converter to compensate the ripple, which inevitably increases the system cost and control complexity. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes a novel suppression method based on three-level topology. By optimizing the capacitance design and improved control algorithm, the instantaneous unbalanced power is dynamically redistributed between two series connected intermediate capacitors in order to make the capacitor voltage ripple complementary to each other. Thus the de-link voltage ripple can be reduced to a large extent. Simulation verifies the correctness and effectiveness of the new suppression method.

    As the luxury goods industry secures a prominent position within the global market, the leading conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH)’s pioneering ventures became a matter of communal concern. The following segments seek to provide operational insights into the management framework and strategic planning of LVMH. Based on three distinctive yet intercorrelated perspectives of analysis, the study unpacks the bullish potentials of LVMH, its sufficiency in risk control and profit generation, and the full-scale success of the conglomerate’s strategic planning of mergers and acquisitions. From the perspective of industry analysis, LVMH and other luxury companies focus on local growth and continue to launch new forms of products in line with the times, also maintaining rational and healthy competition is necessary when competing with different companies in the same industry. According to the Financial analysis, LVMH has a relatively low risk and has a good operation ability to generate a steady profit. Through the audacious pursuit of the M&A strategy in consolidating Bulgari in 2011 and Tiffany & Co. in 2021, it managed to triple the size of its Watches & Jewelry business group over the past decade, further boosting its profit margins through the conglomerate's efficacious post-acquisition brand management. The research is dedicated to the growing body of company-based research on luxury brand management, offering reference value for relative companies in the industry.

    Implicit solvent models offer an attractive way to estimate the effects of a solvent environment on the properties of small or large solutes without the complications of explicit simulations. One common test of accuracy is to compute the free energy of transfer from gas to liquid for a variety of small molecules, since many of these values have been measured. Studies of the temperature dependence of these values (i.e. solvation enthalpies and entropies) can provide additional insights into the performance of implicit solvent models. Here, we show how to compute temperature derivatives of hydration free energies for the 3D-RISM integral equation approach. We have computed hydration free energies of 1123 small drug-like molecules (both neutral and charged). Temperature derivatives were also used to calculate hydration energies and entropies of 74 of these molecules (both neutral and charged) for which experimental data is available. While direct results have rather poor agreement with experiment, we have found that several previously proposed linear hydration free energy correction schemes give good agreement with experiment. These corrections also provide good agreement for hydration energies and entropies though simple extensions are required in some cases.

    In this paper, the improved localized method of approximated particular solutions (ILMAPS) using polyharmonic splines (PHS) together with a low-degree of polynomial basis is used to approximate solutions of various nonlinear elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). The method is completely meshfree, and it uses a radial basis function (RBF) that has no shape parameters. The discretization process is done through a simple collocation technique on a set of points in the local domain of influence. Resulted system of nonlinear algebraic equations is solved by the Picard method.The performance of the proposed method is tested on various nonlinear elliptical problems, including the Poisson-type problems in 2D and 3D with constant or variable coefficients on rectangular or irregular domains and the Poisson–Boltzmann equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions or mixed boundary conditions. The effect of domain shapes in 2D and 3D, types of boundary conditions, and degrees of PHS, and order of polynomial basis are examined. The performance of the method is compared with other bases such as multiquadrics (MQ) basis functions, and with results reported in the literature (method of particular solutions using polynomials). The numerical experiments suggest that ILMAPS with polyharmonic splines yields considerably superior accuracy than other RBFs as well as other approaches reported in the literature for solving nonlinear elliptic PDEs.

    This paper extends the notion of the $\la$-coalescent of Pitman (1999) to the spatial setting. The partition elements of the spatial $\Lambda$-coalescent migrate in a (finite) geographical space and may only coalesce if located at the same site of the space. We characterize the $\Lambda$-coalescents that come down from infinity, in an analogous way to Schweinsberg (2000). Surprisingly, all spatial coalescents that come down from infinity, also come down from infinity in a uniform way. This enables us to study space-time asymptotics of spatial $\Lambda$-coalescents on large tori in $d\ge 3$ dimensions. Our results generalize and strengthen those of Greven et al.     Although solid-state image sensors are known to develop defects in the field, little information is available about the nature, quantity or development rate of these defects. We report on and algorithm and calibration tests, which confirmed the existence of significant quantities of in-field defects in 4 out of 5 high-end digital cameras. Standard hot pixels were identified in all 4 cameras. Stuck hot pixels, which have not been described previously, were identified in 2 cameras. Previously, hot-pixels were thought to have no impact at short exposure durations, but the large offset of stuck hot pixels will degrade almost any image and cannot be ignored. Fully-stuck and abnormal sensitivity defects were not found. Spatial investigation found no clustering. We tracked hot pixel growth over the lifetime of one camera, using only normal photographs. We show that defects develop continually over the lifetime of the sensor, starting within several months of first use, and do not heal over time. Our success in tracing the history of each defect confirms the feasibility of using automatic defect identification to analyze defect response and growth characteristics in a multitude of cameras already in the field, without performing additional experiments or requiring physical access to the cameras.

    Abstract Public pension boards fear inciting stakeholder outrage if they compensate internal investment managers with market-level salaries. We derive theoretical implications in an agency-portfolio-choice model motivated by inequality aversion. In a global sample, relaxing the effect of outrage on contracting leads to an average annual incremental value-added of $49 million generated through 11 bps in higher excess returns from risky assets, at the cost of $302,429 in additional compensation. Governance reforms that address outrage by reducing political appointees or requiring independent skills-based boards can increase the annual value-added. These findings are orthogonal to costly political distortions from underfunding and pay-to-play schemes.
