Berman; Bhuvana Narasimhan; Dipti Misra Sharma; Rukmini Bhaya Nair; Kumiko Fukumura; Seth Campbell; Clifton Pye; Sindy Fabiola Can Pixabaj; Mario Marroquín Pelíz; Margarita Julajuj Mendoza;This preregistered study tested three theoretical proposals for how children form productive yet restricted linguistic generalizations, avoiding errors such as *The clown laughed the man, across three age groups (5–6 years, 9–10 years, adults) and five languages (English, Japanese, Hindi, Hebrew and K'iche'). Participants rated, on a five-point scale, correct and ungrammatical sentences describing events of causation (e.g., *Someone laughed the man; Someone made the man laugh; Someone broke the truck; ?Someone made the truck break). The verb-semantics hypothesis predicts that, for all languages, by-verb differences in acceptability ratings will be predicted by the extent to which the causing and caused event (e.g., amusing and laughing) merge conceptually into a single event (as rated by separate groups of adult participants). The entrenchment and preemption hypotheses predict, for all languages, that by-verb differences in acceptability ratings will be predicted by, respectively, the verb's relative overall frequency, and frequency in nearly-synonymous constructions (e.g., X made Y laugh for *Someone laughed the man). Analysis using mixed effects models revealed that entrenchment/preemption effects (which could not be distinguished due to collinearity) were observed for all age groups and all languages except K'iche', which suffered from a thin corpus and showed only preemption sporadically. All languages showed effects of event-merge semantics, except K'iche' which showed only effects of supplementary semantic predictors. We end by presenting a computational model which successfully simulates this pattern of results in a single discriminative-learning mechanism, achieving by-verb correlations of around r = 0.75 with human judgment data.

Mammals express two closely related paralogs called CKS1 and CKS2, but only CKS2 is expressed in the germ line, indicating that it is solely responsible for regulating CDK functions in meiosis. Using cks2(−/−) knockout mice, we show that CKS2 is a crucial regulator of maturation-promoting factor (MPF; CDK1-cyclin A/B) activity in meiosis. cks2(−/−) oocytes display reduced and delayed MPF activity during meiotic progression, leading to defects in germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) activation, and meiotic spindle assembly. cks2(−/−) germ cells express significantly reduced levels of the MPF components CDK1 and cyclins A1/B1. Additionally, injection of MPF plus CKS2, but not MPF alone, restored normal GVBD in cks2(−/−) oocytes, demonstrating that GVBD is driven by a CKS2-dependent function of MPF. Moreover, we generated cks2(cks1/cks1) knock-in mice and found that CKS1 can compensate for CKS2 in meiosis in vivo, but homozygous embryos arrested development at the 2- to 5-cell stage. Collectively, our results show that CKS2 is a crucial regulator of MPF functions in meiosis and that its paralog, CKS1, must be excluded from the germ line for proper embryonic development.

(1) When $q\le d+1$ , there exist frozen colourings, that is, proper q-colourings of ℤd which cannot be modified on any finite subset. (2) We prove a strong list-colouring property which implies that, when $q\ge d+2$ , any proper q-colouring of the boundary of a box of side length $n \ge d+2$ can be extended to a proper q-colouring of the entire box. (3) When $q\geq 2d+1$ , the latter holds for any $n \ge 1$ . Consequently, we classify the space of proper q-colourings of the ℤd lattice by their mixing properties.

Modern studies originated in quantum theory, but there were anticipations in radar and optics. The mathematical understanding - still being explored - recognises that functions are extremely small where they superoscillate; this has implications for information theory. Applications to optical vortices, sub-wavelength microscopy and related areas of nanoscience are now moving from the theoretical and the demonstrative to the practical. This Roadmap surveys all these areas, providing background, current research, and anticipating future developments.

Major contributors of comp Measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy in lead–lead collisions at sNN−−−√ = 5.02 TeV are presented using a data sample corresponding to 0.49 nb−1 integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015. The recorded minimum-bias sample is enhanced by triggers for “ultra-central” collisions, providing an opportunity to perform detailed study of flow harmonics in the regime where the initial state is dominated by fluctuations. The anisotropy of the charged-particle azimuthal angle distributions is characterized by the Fourier coefficients, v2–v7, which are measured using the two-particle correlation, scalar-product and event-plane methods. We provide a single-letter condition under which such a simulation is asymptotically possible with a vanishing KL divergence. Our condition is nontrivial only in the case where the Gacs-Korner (GK) common information between $U$ and $V$ is nonzero, and we conjecture that only scalar Markov chains $X-U-V-Y$ can be simulated otherwise. Motivated by this conjecture, we further examine the case where both $p_{UV}$ and $p_{XY}$ are doubly symmetric binary sources with parameters $p,q\leq 1/2$ respectively. While it is trivial that in this case $p\leq q$ is both necessary and sufficient, we use Fourier analytic tools to show that when $p$ is close to $q$ then any successful simulation is close to being scalar in the total variation sense.

Aim: To describe the heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability at rest, during a submaximal treadmill test and at rest posttreadmill in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Methods: Twenty children (6-11 years) with CP participated, who had Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I to III. The HR was monitored for 5 minutes seated, during a submaximal treadmill test, and after 5 minutes rest posttreadmill. Outcome variables were HR and the square root of the mean squared differences of successive differences between adjacent heart beats (RMSSD). Results: HR increased during the last stage of the treadmill test compared with rest. RMSSD was reduced during the last 2 minutes of the treadmill test compared with rest. The HR and RMSSD mean value at the second minute posttest were not significantly different from the pretreadmill rest value. Interpretation: The cardiac system in children with CP responded to the submaximal testing.

Abstract: Aims: The HERMES (HEart failure Molecular Epidemiology for Therapeutic targetS) consortium aims to identify the genomic and molecular basis of heart failure. Methods and results: The consortium currently includes 51 studies from 11 countries, including 68 157 heart failure cases and 949 888 controls, with data on heart failure events and prognosis. All studies collected biological samples and performed genome‐wide genotyping of common genetic variants. The enrolment of subjects into participating studies ranged from 1948 to the present day, and the median follow‐up following heart failure diagnosis ranged from 2 to 116 months. Forty‐nine of 51 individual studies enrolled participants of both sexes; in these studies, participants with heart failure were predominantly male (34–90%). The mean age at diagnosis or ascertainment across all studies ranged from 54 to 84 years. Based on the aggregate sample, we estimated 80% power to genetic variant associations with risk of heart failure with an odds ratio of ≥1.10 for common variants (allele frequency ≥ 0.05) and ≥1.20 for low‐frequency variants (allele frequency 0.01–0.05) at P < 5 × 10−8 under an additive genetic model. Conclusions: HERMES is a global collaboration aiming to (i) identify the genetic determinants of heart failure; (ii) generate insights into the causal pathways leading to heart failure and enable genetic approaches to target prioritization; and (iii) develop genomic tools for disease stratification and risk prediction.
