The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the biochemical responses between the R and the S sunflower cultivars after inoculation with S. sclerotiorum. The biochemical activities were detected by measuring necrotic cell, callose deposition, soluble protein content, as well as ROS accumulation at the infection site. Antioxidant enzymatic activities, the transcripts of ROS related genes and marker genes in pathways of salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) were also quantified to characterize the responses. Results showed that compared to the S cultivar, the R cultivar was characterized having reduced number of necrotic cell, more callose deposition on the cell wall, increased soluble protein content, higher levels of H2O2 and ROS scavenger enzyme activities, and upregulated transcript profile of marker genes of both SA and JA pathways.

To improve the stability and increase the economic viability of bio‐oil, high‐ and low‐molecular‐mass pyrolytic lignin (HMM and LMM) were obtained using solvent extraction. The microstructure of pyrolytic lignin was examined by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The dissimilar absorption intensities indicated the different content of corresponding functional groups in HMM and LMM. The pyrolysis behavior of HMM and LMM was studied by thermogravimetry coupled with FTIR. Obviously pyrolytic lignin undergoes three weight loss stages.

Krakenes is the site of a small lake on the west coast of Norway that contains a long sequence of late-glacial sediments. The Younger Dryas is well represented, as a cirque glacier developed in the catchment at this time. This site offers unique opportunities to reconstruct late-glacial environments from independent sources of evidence; physical evidence (glacial geomorphology, sedimentology, palaeomagnetism, radiocarbon dating), and biological evidence from the remains of animals and plants derived from both the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This report describes the background to the site, and the international multidisciplinary project to reconstruct late-glacial and early Holocene environmental and climatic changes at Krakenes.

Hydrogen storage systems using metal hydride has been validated by comparing simulation results with data in other literature. In order to improve the efficiency of hydrogen storage system, the effects of ambient temperature, supply pressure, outlet pressure and overall heat transfer coefficient on the hydrogen storage capacity were studied. The validated lumped parameter model was developed to simulate the performance of hydrogen purification system in assumed industrial process. In order to improve hydrogen recovery rate of purification system, the effects of solid material mass, overall heat transfer coefficient, cooling water temperature and supply pressure were taken into consideration. In general, the hydrogen recovery rate of purification system rises with the increase of solid material mass and overall heat transfer coefficient. And it can be considered as an effective way to increase hydrogen recovery rate by reducing the cooling water temperature and enhancing the supply pressure.

Abstract Background and aims Recent studies have suggested that heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) may play critical roles in cardiovascular disease. However, the effects of HSP70 on the development of atherosclerosis in apoE−/− mice remain largely unknown. This study was to investigate the role and potential mechanism of HSP70 in atherosclerosis. Methods HSP70 was overexpressed in apoE−/− mice and THP-1-derived macrophages with lentiviral vectors. Oil Red O, hematoxylin-eosin, and Masson staining were performed to evaluate atherosclerotic plaque in apoE−/− mice fed the Western type diet. Moreover, immunostaining was employed to detect the expression of relative proteins in aortic sinus. Reporter gene and chromatin immunoprecipitation were performed to analyze the effect of Elk-1 on the promoter activity of ABCA1 and ABCG1; [3H] labeled cholesterol was used to assess the capacity of cholesterol efflux and reverse cholesterol transport (RCT). Results Our results showed that HSP70 increased lipid accumulation in arteries and promoted the formation of atherosclerotic lesion. The capacity of cholesterol efflux was reduced in peritoneal macrophages isolated from HSP70-overexpressed apoE−/− mice. The levels of ABCA1 and ABCG1 expression were also reduced in the peritoneal macrophages and the aorta from apoE−/− mice in response to HSP70. The c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and ETS transcription factor (Elk-1) played a critical role in HSP70-induced downregulation ABCA1 and ABCG1. Further, HSP70 reduced RCT from macrophages to plasma, liver, and feces in apoE−/− mice. Conclusions HSP70 promotes the progression of atherosclerosis in apoE−/− mice by suppressing the expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1 through the JNK/Elk-1 pathway.

As presented in the first companion paper, distributed mixed-integer fuzzy hierarchical programming (DMIFHP) was developed for municipal solid waste management (MSWM) under complexities of heterogeneities, hierarchy, discreteness, and interactions. Beijing was selected as a representative case. This paper focuses on presenting the obtained schemes and the revealed mechanisms of the Beijing MSWM system. The optimal MSWM schemes for Beijing under various solid waste treatment policies and their differences are deliberated. The impacts of facility expansion, hierarchy, and spatial heterogeneities and potential extensions of DMIFHP are also discussed. A few of findings are revealed from the results and a series of comparisons and analyses. For instance, DMIFHP is capable of robustly reflecting these complexities in MSWM systems, especially for Beijing. The optimal MSWM schemes are of fragmented patterns due to the dominant role of the proximity principle in allocating solid waste treatment resources, and they are closely related to regulated ratios of landfilling, incineration, and composting. Communities without significant differences among distances to different types of treatment facilities are more sensitive to these ratios than others. The complexities of hierarchy and heterogeneities pose significant impacts on MSWM practices. Spatial dislocation of MSW generation rates and facility capacities caused by unreasonable planning in the past may result in insufficient utilization of treatment capacities under substantial influences of transportation costs. The problems of unreasonable MSWM planning, e.g., severe imbalance among different technologies and complete vacancy of ten facilities, should be gained deliberation of the public and the municipal or local governments in Beijing. These findings are helpful for gaining insights into MSWM systems under these complexities, mitigating key challenges in the planning of these systems, improving the related management practices, and eliminating potential socio-economic and eco-environmental issues resulting from unreasonable management.

The use of lymphography at the Ontario Cancer Institute is described. Its use in diagnosis and in the treatment of lymphoma is discussed with particular reference to clinical staging and its subsequent treatment. The authors' experience with lymphography in metastatic disease is also described. The elucidation of obscure benign lymphatic abnormalities is illustrated by two cases — one of chyluria secondary to Bancroft's filaria, the other primary amyloidosis of the lymphatic glands.

Dai; Zhaoping Zhong;AbstractPyrolytic lignin is attributed to the instability of bio‐oil but is a potential chemical material.
