    Crisis mortality, a dramatic but temporary increase in mortality rate resulting from a single factor, is an important phenomenon in many populations. This project integrates paleodemographic and isotope analyses to examine temporal changes in diet and migration at the time of the 14th-century Black Death and the interactions among diet, migration, demography, health, sex, and socioeconomic status in the context of the medieval mortality crises of famine and plague. This project will highlight the cultural and social aspects that affect crisis events and their outcomes. Clarifying how dietary resources were distributed in the medieval period will allow for an examination of the ways in which general resource availability in a population does not necessarily translate into widespread benefits in the face of socially-, economically-, or politically-prescribed patterns of access to those resources (Baro and Deubel, 2006; Wisner et al., 2004). This project will also contribute to an understanding of long-term changes in migration in the context of disaster and particularly the health consequences thereof. The results of this project can aid predictions about what might happen in future demographic crises.

    I would be excited to study the sites of Mousa, Old Scatness and Jarlshof, as Iron Age monuments in Britain are a personal research interest of mine. I envisage this PhD would provide a unique opportunity to increase my knowledge of brochs and later prehistory in the Northern Isles and to find innovative ways of presenting archaeology to different audiences. It would also allow me to use the professional skills I have learnt in my time working with Historic England's Geospatial Imaging team in a long-term academic project. Importantly, I have a skill-set which is particularly suited to ensure that the PhD would be successful and meet its full potential.

    Computer and Information Technology (CIT) has undergone a series of evolutionary innovation over the past decades and improved the quality of human life significantly. CIT in the 21st century faces an ever-increasing number of rapid challenges and revolutionary developments. It is therefore important to ensure that the UK strength in CIT is maintained and enhanced. The 10th IEEE International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (CIT-2010) is one of the most prestigious international events which spans the entire range of computer science and information technologies and provides a key international forum to inspire advances in information and communications technology. The University of Bradford is privileged to host this reputable international event (CIT-2010) during 29 June - 1 July, 2010. The conference is being organised for the first time in the UK. This proposal aims to seek EPSRC sponsorship and funding to support four world renowned scientists to deliver keynote addresses at the conference in order to boost the quality of attendance and establish the importance of the key research themes in the area of CIT. The invited keynote speeches will be delivered by the world's leading scientists from academia and industry, covering the important research topics: Communication Networks, Bioinformatics, Networks and Economics, and Information Security. Hosting such a prestigious international event in the UK coupled with these distinguished keynote addresses will help to keep up with the latest research results and developments of information and communications technology, identify the frontier of the future research, raise the UK research profile in general, facilitate the opportunities of technology transfer and research collaboration, and ensure the vitality of research on information and communications technology in the country.

    The move toward worldwide wireless communication continues at remarkable pace, and the antenna element of the technology is crucial to its success. Various mobile antenna structures have found increasing attention, significant characteristics being small size and low cost. However, the characteristics also need to be optimised with respect to the antenna radiation patterns and the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) levels for compliance with international safety guidelines. Moreover, the antenna should have weak coupling with the body of the handset to provide the best performance stability and impedance matching in the presence of a human body, including the hand holding the handset. A good candidate is to use balanced antennas to reduce the effect of the mobile antenna on the handset, since unbalanced antennas drive current into the handset chassis, which interacts strongly with the unpredictable characterisitics of the body. The maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) values have been shown to be substantially reduced when placed next to the human head, compared with conventional unbalanced antennas, if these antennas are well-designed. The purpose of the study will be to design an antenna that will be developed using the Bradford hybrid electromagnetic modelling technique, allied to genetic algorithms to optimise the enhancement of the bandwidth. Multiple-band and wideband variants of these antennas for 2G, 3G, B3G and IEEE 802.x mobile bands will also be considered as a key target of the project.
