IFPEN has been developing for more than 10 years second-generation biofuels production processes where lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., wheat straw, wood, miscanthus) is degraded by enzymes produced by the fungus Trichoderma reesei. Released sugars are then fermented into ethanol or other chemicals. This proposal will focus on the characterization of new Lytic Polysaccharide Monoxygenases (LPMOs) in collaboration with INRAE. These copper metalloenzymes oxidatively cleave the cellulose fibers, which facilitate the action of hydrolytic enzymes to deconstruct cellulose fibers.
